Incredible pics. My only regret in life is that I will never go into space - never go to another planet. |

Fake! CG! I can see the strings! JK...that is just amazing. It really makes me want to study science/space when I see photos like that. Mik...what I would pay to go into space only to be able to look down at the Earth, you have no idea. If it's possible, if I'm within weeks of my death, I'd love to go up there right before the end. A more beautiful sight I cannot imagine. |

Makes you want to photoshop a record needle on it. ![]() The closest thing to visiting another planet and visiting with its denizens, is scuba diving. (And it's how astronauts train for zero-gravity, too!) Stunning photo.... |

I'm having a ball in my astronomy class don't you know. We're all into black hole and white wholes and stuff right now and the guy is a mathematical whiz as well as a Ph.D. in nuclear something or other. He used to teach at Palomar and we are getting the same text and everything they get. He's fascinating to listen to but his quizzes and tests are monstrous. Open book notwithstanding. |

Fantastic pictures. I can't get too much of this stuff. I'd rather fund NASA than almost any other part of the government. Big Al |

Me too, Al, me too. Look how many innovations came from the 60's space program. Huge. |

Space is so fascinating. I was shocked and saddened to find out that a lot of kids aren't "into" space the way kids seemed to be even when I was a kid. My gifted group couldn't care less (with only a couple exceptions). My grade 8s a couple years ago felt the same way. Even though I knew that about my grade 8s, I decided to go ahead with a unit I had planned around the movie Apollo 13. It was the last week and a half of school, and I needed SOMETHING to keep them engaged. They were absolutely enthralled by the movie. Just captivated. Then we talked about the space station, I showed them pictures of deep space, and we did an outdoor activity about comparative size/distance of the planets in our solar system. By the end of the unit, I had a couple dozen of my 100 students giving me daily updates on what they had read on NASA's site, about going out with their parents to spot the shuttle and the space station in the sky, etc. I was so thrilled that these kids were getting into the idea. I think the media downplaying the whole space program has made kids see it as boring. I really think they see space travel as easy as taking an airplane. It was fun to watch their feelings change during that unit. |

I wonder if part of the problem is that the night sky isn't what it used to be. Light pollution has taken much of the wonder of looking up away. Big Al |

Perhaps, Al - though I live in a fairly rural area and the skies here can be pretty spectacular. Along the same lines, though - how many kids actually are outside after dark? |

Mik, you have no idea. All kids want to be astronauts, right? I had everything all lined up to go to the Air Force Academy, and from the Air Force, the plan was to go to NASA. I had the grades, I had the recommendations, what I didn't have was the health. Eyesight and Asthma. I told M&M's even after we were married (but before Luke, kid's are a game changer), that if they were ever looking for a volunteer to go out in a rover, even with no possibility of a return, I would be among the first in line. |
| The problem with having an open mind is that people keep trying to put things in it. | |
