So I live on a quiet, suburban cul-de-sac and; there's a strange car parked out front

If you live near a business area, she may have been early for a meeting and just didn't want to sit in the parking lot.

I live near nothing. :tiki:

She never got out of her car, either. Initially thought she was going to try to save my soul, but she didn't.

I know she left but never approach something like that, alone. Call the cops, that's what they get paid for.

You're right, VPG. That's why I went back in when I saw someone in the car. If she returns, I will defintitely call the police so they can check it out. We have very competent and friendly local police. Heck, we have an officer and an FBI agent just down the street.

Now it sound like an undercover cop watching the other cop or the FBI agent.

Naw, they're on a different street. And they actually go out and work during the day.

Well, anyway... Solid advice: Call the cops. :thumb:

This happened to me once - we had a police station opposite, and I went in and told them about the dodgy looking guy in the car on our street. Apparently he was indeed an undercover policeman watching the house a little way away where there was some suspected shenanigans going on. He was the most suspicious looking plain-clothes copper I'd ever seen. He needed retraining.

That's funny.

Our undercover cops drive pastel cars with black wheels (no silver hubcaps, all black). My grade school children can identify them.

I know someone who parked on a nice quiet street on Staten Island a couple doors down from a house owned by someone whose middle name was in quotation marks. A couple guys came out to "talk" to him, and he's stayed away from that street ever since.

The foundation of many of those nation states involved population movements in the aftermath. R2, my thought would be that it's just someone looking for some quiet time to do some work before another meeting. I have a friend that is usually out all day at client meetings around the area and when they have downtime, they'll just park their car and do some paperwork. But I like PL's idea at the beginning of this thread...I wouldn't call the cops right away unless the actual person looks suspicious. [politically incorrect] Yes, I would decide whether to call the cops based on the person's look [/politically incorrect] If they were there for 30+ minutes I might go out and ask if they need help and let them know that sometimes cops come around here since there have been some robberies and/or strange cars lately.

I was killin' time before a meeting once, so I got a fast-food lunch and drove to a cemetery to eat it. I was sitting there in my car, enjoying a very peaceful, quiet lunch, when the manager of the chapel/cemetery came out and asked me what I was doing. I said, "I didn't think the sound of my chewing would disturb anyone, here." He huffed off like I'd committed some crime. Pfffft....

I like to watch trains. Sometimes I like to eat at a bench or picnic table instead of in my car. I park in a variety of places to do so. I've lost count of the number of times I've been questioned by the police. Sometimes, it's at their own behest and sometimes because someone called about a strange vehicle or person. Sometimes they ask me to move on. I resent that when I'm parked on a public street or eating in a public park, but I usually don't argue.

One day, I stopped to watch a train while I was returning from the lumber yard and left my car for a better view. When I got home, my wife asked me if I was watching trains. I replied that I was, but how did she know. It turned out that while I was out of the car, someone called the police and they ran the plate and called my house to see if anyone knew why the car was parked where it was. My wife asked them if it was anywhere near a railroad, and when they answered affirmatively, she told them she was pretty sure I was out somewhere near there watching trains.

On another occasion, I was watching trains from a bridge. I noticed a state trooper drive past, look me over, and then park at the end of the bridge. As he exited his vehicle and started toward me, I noticed that he loosened his pistol in its holster. I was careful to keep my hands in plain sight while he approached. After answering his questions and producing ID, he told me a citizen had reported me being there and thought I should be investigated. Furthermore, I should return to my car and leave. He offered me a lift to where my car was parked. That evening, as I watched the TV news, there was a story about an escapee from the county jail who had abducted two girls. I was very surprised to see a picture that looked very much like me shown on the TV and understood at that point why I had seemed potentially threatening.

Weird story, Al.

I'm generally not a susicious person. Something seemed odd about this car. It drove around the cul-de-sac very slowly and left. Then they came back and parked and stayed put.

There are a lot of odd people who visit our street. It's just they all live here. This person did not.

I live at the end of a dead-end road, too. I see vehicles come up and turn around frequently. I think it's usually people trying to find a shortcut, but I'm not sure. If they stop there at night, it's most likely to be a couple of teenagers trying to find a quiet spot to make out. The worst was a tractor-trailer (53 foot trailer) who misread his map, got the the end of the road and tried to turn around. I awoke to the sound of a diesel engine and got up to see what was going on. He had the trailer wedged against the slope in front of my house (he'd have sheared off the gas meter if it had been a little lower down the slope). He had the tractor jack-knifed into the trailer and had run out of maneuvering room, since his rig was longer than the road was wide. He was up against a power pole on the opposite side from my house. I called the police then.

Eventually, the power company had to come, take down the wires, and remove the pole to free the tractor. A big tow truck came and pulled the trailer around by itself and finally they got everything out of there. I watched it all because my driveway is at the end of the road and I had no way out.

I doubt that driver drove for that trucking company again. Every time I see one of their rigs on the highway, I'm reminded of the incident.

Al,

Your story reminds me of a story one of our astronomy club members told us one night.

He drove out of town on a lonesome country road in search of dark skies. One he arrived at what he thought was a suitable place he simply pulled off the road and set up his 12" Meade Dob which is all white.

Posted Image

About an hour or so went by and a police car pulled up with his big spotlight on him. Asked what he was doing and he told the officer. The officer started laughing and the club member asked him what was so funny?

The officer said someone called the police about a man on the side of the road who was hugging a water heater.

As a "road warrior", I often have a bit of time to kill before meetings. I'll often pull into a neighbourhood to do a little paperwork or something between them. When I know the area, I'll look for a park or somewhere where just sitting in my car won't be unnoticed. If I don't know the area well, I take what I can get.

So, yes, it could be suspicious, but it could also just be another road warrior. :P

A few weeks ago, I started my day at 6am driving to Sarnia to teach a class. I got back to Chatham at 5:00, grabbed something for dinner, and had just over an hour to kill before my evening meeting at 7. I was EXHAUSTED. I drove down a country road and found a little widened area on the shoulder and took a nap. When I woke up, there was a police car parked beside me. I rolled down my window and the cop told me that they had gotten a call that there was a woman parked on the side of the road and the caller thought that she might be dead. I assured him I was very much alive, and he went away.
