Hi everyone, Improv and I are in French St. Martin with five other couples celebrating (late) the guys' retirement. We rented an 8500 sq. foot villa with a spectacular view of Marigot, the island capital, and a long shot across the water to the island of Anguilla. Here's the gated entrance to the villa: ![]() ![]() Once inside the compound we got our first glimpse of home for the next week: ![]() The villa has six master suites, all with grand views. While the interior rooms are nice, we have all gravitated to the grand outdoor living area: ![]() And the pool area: ![]() ![]() ![]() We've been to a few beaches: Maho Beach, where the planes come in: ![]() Dawn Beach, where we had quite a few drinks: ![]() Before leaving, one of the ladies in our group decided she wanted to play the steel drums with the band: ![]() Nightlife consists of going out for dinner, then either coming back to the villa for a dice game or two: ![]() ![]() Or out gambling in the casinos: ![]() And here's the whole gang: ![]() Hope everyone is doing well back home. We'll check in another time. |

The Confederate soldier was peculiar in that he was ever ready to fight, but never ready to submit to the routine duty and discipline of the camp or the march. The soldiers were determined to be soldiers after their own notions, and do their duty, for the love of it, as they thought best. Carlton McCarthy

Ah, the Caribbean. And a large house with good friends is ideal. Love the name .... Maison de Reve. You've been to St. Martin before. A favorite place? |

Civilisation, I vaguely realized then - and subsequent observation has confirmed the view - could not progress that way. It must have a greater guiding principle to survive. To treat it as a carcase off which each man tears as much as he can for himself, is to stand convicted a brute, fit for nothing better than a jungle existence, which is a death-struggle, leading nowhither. I did not believe that was the human destiny, for Man individually was sane and reasonable, only collectively a fool. I hope the gunner of that Hun two-seater shot him clean, bullet to heart, and that his plane, on fire, fell like a meteor through the sky he loved. Since he had to end, I hope he ended so. But, oh, the waste! The loss! - Cecil Lewis

PD, this is our 5th visit to St. Martin, the first with a group of friends. We've had such an outstanding time that we've decided to do this annually. We polled everyone on where they'd been in the Caribbean so we could pick places no one had seen at all -- next year will either be Barbados or Bermuda. Retirement is fun! Thanks for the well-wishes everyone. We appreciate it. |

Random FML: Today, I was fired by my boss in front of my coworkers. It would have been nice if I could have left the building before they started celebrating. FML The founding of the bulk of the world's nation states post 1914 is based on self-defined nationalisms. The bulk of those national movements involve territory that was ethnically mixed. The foundation of many of those nation states involved population movements in the aftermath. When the only one that is repeatedly held up as unjust and unjustifiable is the Zionist project, the term anti-semitism may very well be appropriate. - P*D
