Scientist Stephen Hawking 'very ill'

LONDON, England (CNN) -- Scientist and author Stephen Hawking is "very ill" and has been hospitalized, according to Cambridge University, where he is a professor.

Cambridge University said the 67-year-old is "comfortable" and will stay overnight at Addenbrookes Hospital in Cambridge.

Hawking, one of the world's most famous physicists, is also a cosmologist, astronomer, and mathematician.

Wheelchair-bound Hawking is perhaps most famous for "A Brief History of Time" which explored the origins of the universe in layman's terms, is considered a modern classic.

Hawking has Lou Gehrig's Disease (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, or ALS), which is usually fatal after three years. Hawking has survived for more than 40 years since his diagnosis.

At Cambridge, he holds the position of Lucasian Professor Mathematics -- the prestigious post held from 1669 to 1702 by Sir Isaac Newton.

Hawking has guest-starred, as himself, on Star Trek: The Next Generation and The Simpsons. He also said if he had the choice of meeting Newton or Marilyn Monroe, his choice would be Marilyn.

Oh crap.

This guy has been an inspiration for what can be achieved by the human mind despite overwhelming physical adversity. I remember seeing a documentary on him when I was studying undergraduate physics in 1981 and being massively impressed then when he was getting by with just an interpretor rather than the electronic voice synthesiser - since then he's outlasted all predictions of mortality. Let's hope he can survive this.

Amazing man in so many ways. He must have given such hope to other ALS sufferers over the years. Hope he can get past this.

I bought his book. After three or four false starts I put it down and waited. Went on a cruise, perfect.
I was sitting on deck staring at the book and a man walked up to me and said,"are you into that?" I thought about lying, but at sea with the fear of God thing and all, I said, "I have no idea WTF I'm reading.
The man said "thank God, I thought it was me". We went and had a Martini together. I never touched the book again, but I am praying for the good Doctor.

Finally
I tried three times to read that book. Never got beyond halfway through.

I worked with a surgeon who did his fellowship at Cambridge. He knew some of Hawking's grad students, who, to a man, say that he is an unsufferable pr*ck. However, a genius he is, and has contributed much to our understanding.

Good luck Prof. Hawking.

LOL! Great story, VPG.

I hope he makes it. He has survived through so much already. I still think he has a lot to offer in his field.

Theoretically speaking of course!

I read A Brief History of Time. Twice.

I hope everything turns out well for the good professor.

I have read and enjoyed the Brief History of Time and other work by him.

I think in a strange way the ALS has enhanced his work.

A physicist who did similar work might be easy to ignore as being too advanced for the average guy. His overcoming the adversity has made his work more compelling.
