I Owe It All To John D'Oh
Jeez, even when I'm agreeing with you, you're prickly.
It would be unwise to underestimate what large groups of ill-informed people acting together can achieve. -- John D'Oh, January 14, 2010.

The thing about a terrorist attack is that it's not possible to prevent it, certainly by traditional military means. Anyone who lived in Britain in the 1970's and 80's knows how much trouble you end up with - kids phoning public events with bomb-scares on a boring Saturday afternoon just because they can. I lost count of the hours I spent queuing up outside swimming pools, cinemas, football games, simply because some dickhead wanted to test out his Irish accent on the local constabulary.

If you have home-grown terrorists living in the country as part of a sleeper cell, how are you going to stop him with an F-22? A university lecturer in my home town, who'd been apparently quietly working away teaching my friends in the intricacies of something-or-other, was suddenly arrested after a number of bombs went off in Northern England, including a really big one that blew up a significant chunk of the centre of Manchester - finally, after 200 years of trying, the Irish managed something worthwhile. I laugh now, but I often used to drink in one of the pubs that was right in the middle of the devastation.

Of course, the main reason that the local Manchester locals weren't terrorised into house-bound submission is that the bombings were preferable to their home-lives.

Civilisation, I vaguely realized then - and subsequent observation has confirmed the view - could not progress that way. It must have a greater guiding principle to survive. To treat it as a carcase off which each man tears as much as he can for himself, is to stand convicted a brute, fit for nothing better than a jungle existence, which is a death-struggle, leading nowhither. I did not believe that was the human destiny, for Man individually was sane and reasonable, only collectively a fool.

I hope the gunner of that Hun two-seater shot him clean, bullet to heart, and that his plane, on fire, fell like a meteor through the sky he loved. Since he had to end, I hope he ended so. But, oh, the waste! The loss!

To be more serious, I take exception to the idea that terrorism sends the populace into a terrified mess afraid to leave their homes. From my experience, and even more what I've heard from my parents who lived through the Blitz in London and Manchester, it has the opposite effect. People get really p!ssed off when other people try to blow them up, and pretty much give the old two-fingered salute, whether the terrorists are Nazis, the IRA, or this latest bunch of knobheads.
