I wonder what they speak in Australia?

Finally
Australian, perhaps?

Obama invokes personal diplomacy to avert NATO stalemate.
Quote:

At a news conference afterward, Obama said his debut on the international stage had convinced him that “political interaction in Europe is not that different from the United States Senate,” where he served before entering the White House.

“There’s a lot of -- I don’t know what the term is in Austrian -- wheeling and dealing, and people are pursuing their interests, and everybody has their own particular issues and their own particular politics,” he said in response to an Austrian reporter’s question.

For all Obama’s success in conciliating the Danes and Turks, the NATO summit was far from an unblemished triumph for the new U.S. president.

I'd rather listen to an hour of Abba than an hour of The Beatles.

There is a line we cross when we go from "I will believe it when I see it" to "I will see it when I believe it".

HOLY CARP!!!
As usual, if Dubya had said this...
Civilisation, I vaguely realized then - and subsequent observation has confirmed the view - could not progress that way. It must have a greater guiding principle to survive. To treat it as a carcase off which each man tears as much as he can for himself, is to stand convicted a brute, fit for nothing better than a jungle existence, which is a death-struggle, leading nowhither. I did not believe that was the human destiny, for Man individually was sane and reasonable, only collectively a fool.

I hope the gunner of that Hun two-seater shot him clean, bullet to heart, and that his plane, on fire, fell like a meteor through the sky he loved. Since he had to end, I hope he ended so. But, oh, the waste! The loss!

Many news reports suggest otherwise. For example, from the AP:

Quote:

Stop after stop, crowds are thronging, leaders gushing, headlines blaring. Even a roomful of foreign reporters applauded after President Barack Obama's London news conference.

They love him over here.

David Gergen was also raving about Obama's trip, saying it's the most successful trip abroad by an American President that he can remember.
It would be unwise to underestimate what large groups of ill-informed people acting together can achieve. -- John D'Oh, January 14, 2010.

I think the take-home message from the AP article is this:

Quote:

Altogether, Obama is piling up a mixed bag of success, failure and to-be-determined.

Agreed. I'm trying to put things into perspective but he's pissed me off with a lot recently. This gaffe stuff doesn't really bother me much, but the military health care thing and the internet/state of emergency issue really piss me off.
I cite irreconcilable differences.

Al, which one is "Austrian".
All of the above, JB. :)

Are we absolutely sure whether he said "in Austrian" or "in Austria"? Seems like some people are desperate for something to complain about (and that comment is not directed at you. I've never noticed that tendency on your part.)

To be honest, I couldn't tell you the first thing about the regional dialects of Austria or what the dominant language is there.

Who's complaining? Certainly not me. I was a little worried that with the disappearance of The Great Communicerator we'd be at a loss for entertainment for the next four years.
