Any of you have any experience with myoepithelioma? (dealing with a parishioner with it; very nasty; just looking for more information on it) |

Ditto... Do you know where this person has it and how far along it is? I know from the "-oma," that it is a type of cancer. Is it, or can it be, fatal? In any case, I hope your parishioner is as comfortable as possible, and I hope that it can be treated. |

also never came across it...but just as an aside... tumors are named by their component cells...with the suffix oma, which can designate both benign or malingnant but usually benign. rarely, u can have tumors of the mixed variety, which means either the cells has features of two (or more) types of origin, or they are are actually 2 (or more) populations of cells in the tumor. so a myoepithelioma is a tumor which comprises myoid or muscle like cells and epithelial or lining/skin cells. probably a cell which lines a duct and has contractile ability... as to the biological behaviour of such a tumor, that would depend on numerous factors, such as are the cells malignant (myoepithelial carcinoma), the location and growth rate. many benign entities are problematic simply due to location (from googling i understand the parotid gland is a common location ) which is known for mixed tumors and has the facial nerve running smack through it. but there things can pop up anywhere there is tissue that can contain this population of cells. anyway...if its not malignant, its probably just a question of finding the right surgeon to get it out. |

It's extremely rare that it's malignant - in fact, the local university cancer hospital has only seen this twice before - but his is. The tumor was above the roof of his mouth. He's lost half of his palate, and the portion of his skull that held his upper left teeth, and the lower portion of the left eye socket, having to have them reconstructed. |

Poor guy. You certainly are being tested this year, Dewey. That has to be rough. |
