MS, RR, et al...; hows the workin' out, y'know... workin'?

MS said she was still doing the running thing (I think blondie said she did as well?), and I know RR is getting into Tae Kwon Do, so just wondered how working out is going for everybody. If you have active hobbies, how are they going?

I'm starting month 4 of Wing Chun, and it's really coming along. My speed and flexibility has increased a ton, and I've started to do Chi Sao drills, which are great for sensitivity, reaction time and structure.

I started to get some pretty good distances in with my running, too; 13 miles has been my max so far, but with that kind of mileage I can't go every day anymore, since combining that with my Wing Chun stuff, it's too hard on my body. I think I'm going to try mixing things up with bike rides instead.

It's weird, but this is by far the most in shape I have ever been. I can officially not fit into a single pair of pants I own; I found a pair of ratty ol' jeans from my senior year of high school and even they were a bit too big around the waist. Instead of watching what I eat, I now have to make sure I'm eating enough since I'm just tearing through calories. I'm not trying to bulk up -- and I'm not, really -- but I don't want to lose muscle mass either.

How's it going for everybody else? For the more sedentary among us, have any plans to get outside and get active in something, now that spring is here?

That's cool, Aqua.

I had to take a break when allergy season started early -- olive tree pollens affects my lungs. I'm planning to get back to the gym next week -- I'm sticking with indoor activities until olive tree pollen season is over in late May. The pool should be nice and warm by then.

Oh I hear ya. I used to be allergic to everything growing up, so I had a ton of allergy shots. I had no allergy problems of any kind for years but I think now they're starting to come back. Geez I hope not, it's such a pain to deal with.

Do you take anything for the allergies or just try to steer clear of the trees?

You rule, Aqua! I'm envious of your Wing Chun.

We broke boards yesterday. Surprisingly easy and painless (pine boards); the most important thing for us newbies is to have someone hold the board firmly for us. Our instructor seems to be using it more for a confidence builder than anything else ("Boards... do not hit back"), though speed and form are very important. Of course, the truly skilled board breakers can do it to a board tossed into the air (like Ohara did!). TKD has been really good for my flexibility too.

I've dusted off the Trek and been doing a LOT of bike riding the past week, and it's so much fun compared to the damn treadmill. I'd like to do a few triathlons this summer, and maybe the Toronto marathon this October, since I'll be living in Canadia by then.

I need to get new weight training equipment, so I haven't been doing much on that front recently.
Civilisation, I vaguely realized then - and subsequent observation has confirmed the view - could not progress that way. It must have a greater guiding principle to survive. To treat it as a carcase off which each man tears as much as he can for himself, is to stand convicted a brute, fit for nothing better than a jungle existence, which is a death-struggle, leading nowhither. I did not believe that was the human destiny, for Man individually was sane and reasonable, only collectively a fool.

I hope the gunner of that Hun two-seater shot him clean, bullet to heart, and that his plane, on fire, fell like a meteor through the sky he loved. Since he had to end, I hope he ended so. But, oh, the waste! The loss!

I'm on shots all year and just during olive tree season I take inhalers and a spray. I can't avoid the olive trees -- they're all over. I spray the ones in my yard, but the neighbors have them too.

My current exercise regime is painting the beehive fireplace, it's quite tall so it's a decent workout.

Well I'm not nearly as good as the girl in the video. I can definitely defend myself against Joe Everyman though, so it's coming along.

I'd like to try boards myself since I've never done it. I hear it's a very good test of your technique.

What kind of Trek do you have? I have a 4300, a mountain bike, so sadly it doesn't see much action 'round my area. Last time I took it in though, I tightened the hell out of the suspension and got road-friendly tires, so it should be more road-friendly now.

Dude, triathalons? That'd be awesome! Have you done any before? The Toronto marathon would be pretty cool I bet; 89th is trying to get me to do the MCM this year but I dunno if I feel up for it.

Do you have the shots every year? I know I'm going to have to do something soon to mitigate my allergies, but not sure the best way to go about it.

Beehive fireplaces are cool, I think. Is it outside or inside?

I have the same bike as in my avatar, a Trek Equinox 7. More than enough bike for me.

I did a half-triathlon last year. I'll probably do the same again this year, but I would like to try at least one full triathlon. Depends if I can set aside enough time for it.

You definitely should do the Marine Corps run with 89th! Everyone should be able to boast of doing at least one marathon in their life! :thumb:

Shots are a five-year plan. Weekly at first, then every other week, then once a month.

It's inside, in the family room. The previous owner painted it garish deep red and orange. We hated it, but I've finally have gotten around to paint it. Because the old colors were so hot and garish, we're going with neutral cool shades of brown, sort of a malted milk shake with cocoa. If I get tired of that eventually, I might go Tuscan yellow.

Well, I've upped my exercise routine which was swimming 3/4 mile three times a week, to a five days a week regime of pilates and step class (1/2 hour each) two days, swimming the other three days combined with 1/2 hour of weight lifting. Ha - at 53, I too am in better shape than I ever have been.

Swimming + pilates & step + weight lifting sounds like a pretty good, comprehensive program you got yourself on! :thumb:

I wish I had a friend who could re-teach me the breast stroke. I flub up every time I try it. And I used to be a strong swimmer. I'd sure swim more if I could add in that one stroke. Front & back & side get tiring. I can only side stroke well on one side & tend to kink up my neck.

I'm running (albeit on a TM) ... got marathon plans again this October ... need to get my Kms up to 10K by the end of this month then get on the set marathon plan .. that's 5 days/week.

I'm back with my trainer 3 days a week ... am doing 115 lb cage squat sets alternating with 320 lb leg presses 2/3 days. I'll back off on the leg work once my Kms get up again for the marathon. He's really pushing upper body this year, so I should be back to my Amazon self by fall ;) . I'd like to see my tummy muscles again so that means more core work. Because of my weight I need a strong core-back to run.

I'm hoping for a 30 lb wt. drop this year b/c training-cross training wise I WILL be doing something every single day. I'll be upfront: I'm putting my family on the back burner. This event is important to me now.

Aqua .. I re-read.
You rock babe.
High school jeans.
I've never re-visited those days.
I have zip for balance & flexibility. I have to do my stretching hanging tight on a pole.

I wish I could develop some time to a martial art.
I've always had this fantasy wanting to be a tough gal LOL ... it might be an outlet because I repress so much.
Something to think of.

Good luck with your training RR.
I wish I could do triathlon.
It's a big regret.

I hope your breathing gets better as this part of the season wears on MS.

KathyK .. I admire you .. you're very consistent with your workouts. Cardio wise you must be very strong. Swimming is terrific exercise cause it's full body.

Because of my right shoulder, which gets eventually gets annoyed with repeated overhead movements, I'm switching to breast stroke this summer. I don't know that stroke well so we'll see how I do. I'll watch my DVD of swim strokes, with tips on correct technique.

Well judging by your workout regimen already I'd say you'd be more than ready!

Once you're in shape (sounds like you're more than covered there), it's all just learning the techniques and stuff. And yeah, I'm not sure why but it's ridiculously therapeutic. I've tried toning it down some and not practicing/working out as much as I've been. Nope. Not happening. At least right now, I need the outlet.

You get into better shape if you're not already, you increase flexibility, speed and balance, you learn how to handle yourself and you learn about yourself, too. It can do a lot for ya so I'd recommend it to everybody. :thumb:

How many marathons have you done? Any particular training tips you'd recommend? I'd love to do one but man, it's pretty daunting.

I've only done only 2 Aqua & I'd say my style is more a 'slog' b/c I walk & run my events (& slowly with my running). The reason I keep trying is so I can get in shape, to call myself a real runner. I do okay strength wise. I use the Running Room's Book on Running by John Stanton for marathon/half marathon training schedules. I also like Jeff Galloway's "Marathon You Can Do it" book. The 2 tips I'd give as starters would be proper shoes, and increasing your mileage by 10% max a week. If you can run 13 miles Aqua, you can do 26. It ain't that far. But it's a 16-24 wk training commitment, an intriguing personal journey .. You'll sort through, uncover, discover lots of yourself while you work towards it.
:)

I've vision issues Aqua. Depth perception might limit martial arts. I'd sure like to be more flexible though & gain some better balance. I'd like to be confident riding a bike again. :)

I think everyone needs a physical outlet for their latent aggressions. That's therapeutic.

Well, not to push the issue but you'd even be okay with the vision issues. (My sifu can do the stuff blindfolded, for example. ) There's an old guy in my class that at the start, would get a little winded just walking around. He also has real bad arthritis. But, he's doing straight kicks now.

Really!?!?

You and Free Rider .. both of you mention stuff that I wouldn't think possible for myself.

Hmmm.

Keep posting of it.
