I've been saying for a while, that we need a third party. I think most Americans recognize the need for one, and I think it would be a huge benefit to our government, too.

It's time for leadership. Not partisanship.

While I might agree with some of what he's saying, I think it's important for those of you on the right to recognize that he would basically be splitting the center-to-right-of-center vote between two parties. Far be it from me to complain about that, but it's one excellent way of ensuring that the Democrats retain the White House and win any other race where three candidates are running.

The only way Republicans could benefit is if the existence of a third "Gingrich Party" encouraged some left-of-center type to form a fourth party and split the left-side vote, too.

Maybe... But there are plenty of conservative Democrats who would probably join a third party, and plenty of moderate Republicans who would also join a third party. It may not be the Libertarian Party, but I'm betting it would be something a lot more centrist and less knee-jerk than what we've got going in D.C. right now.

The real question is, would any of them be willing to take the risk of not being re-elected, if, by crossing over to a third party, they end up pissing off those who voted them into office.

No pain, no gain. You have to pay the price sometime.

You might be surprised how many conservative Democrats such a party might take in.

I think Quirt's right. A third party would get little support from centrist Democrats, perhaps because they're loyal, or perhaps because there's only 12 of them. His support will come from the Republicans.

Ah, George, you're such a cynic. Why I bet we'd get three, maybe four of 'em. :lol2:

Obama, Pelosi, and Reid are taking care of that problem. The republicans are seeing that their own party isn't standing for the issues that matter, and the democrats are beginning to see that the democrat party has left the ranch. It isn't just republicans who are looking for real leadership - lots of democrats are too.

The methods used by attempted third parties in the past have not worked. All they've done is wasted millions of dollars in trying to win national elections too soon. They do some campaigning, get some support, get all excited, and shoot for the presidency. That won't cut it.

If you really want to create a viable third party, you need to do it region by region. Instead of running for national offices, take those millions and go after a state government or two. Again, the money they raise for the presidential election will never garner more than a few points in the polls. If you used that same money to win offices in PA and OH, OTOH, you can pull off some big wins. If those elected officials do a decent job, then you can expand, as it will be easier holding those offices as incumbents and you can start going after congressional seats. Get a couple of senators in place, and now things will start to happen. All together, it will take 12-16 years to have a viable candidate for the Presidency.
The problem with having an open mind is that people keep trying to put things in it.
