He went to school and asked Mr. T if he could research turtles.

Damn! Beat me to it.
Your turtle bling was better than anything i could come up with, though.

I had parakeets as a kid. Loved loved loved them and they have sweet little personalities. Affectionate and funny.

They don't live as long, though (2-6 years?)

As a rule, if it is by nature prey rather than predator it makes a poor pet. A boy needs a dog.

I agree. Dogs are a lot of work, though. Get a cat.

After discussing it at length with T3h B34r, we've both come to the unanimous conclusion that the best pet for Liam would be a Great Pyrenees.

That's the ticket, Dol. It would be like getting a twofer; a dog and a pony.

A cat? Too much? Find a small little guy who needs a home?
I'd get a cat too. You can get a lot out of them (at their discretion, obviously), and they're pretty self-suffiicient. Only real problems are the shedding and scratching the furniture. Plus, if you're lucky you'll get free mice and birds for Liam to dissect.
There are Soft Claws for cats so they can't damage anything or poke holes in their owners. Wherever we take Buddy, people ask about his Soft Claws, they think it's a cool idea.

Also, let's not forget the potential for lolcats!

Cats are a more common allergy, though. And that isn't just Liam ... it's his friends, who he might want to invite over.

I love cats almost as much as dogs, and if I could have both I would, but one of the Quirtlets and I are both allergic, so we can only have dogs.
It would be unwise to underestimate what large groups of ill-informed people acting together can achieve. -- John D'Oh, January 14, 2010.

Rabbits are great, IF (as others have said) you don't mind cleaning up a few poop piles after a romp in the living room and yes - watch the wires. A friend's rabbit recently bit through her bf's fish tank wires, killing his fish! Cats are also very good for kids. My choice when I was about 9 was either a rabbit kitten (ours had just had a litter) or a cat kitten (that's what I wanted). I chose the cat of course, but our three rabbits were also very nice pets.
And how are you today?

Liam has two cats at his dad's. I think he wants something different at mom's. He's also had a hamster at dad's. Hmm...

Get him a Sheltie - something that will gladly play with him in the house without utter mayhem ensuing. They love games if you bring them up that way.

Also to consider, what will you do with it when you go out of town. Someone to feed it (perhaps bugs, depending on the pet), clean up its poop, playtime if it needs it, etc.

Will this pet be going with Liam to his father's house?

"Yum Yums" .. now ain't that the cutest thing?

My best GF has guinea pigs .. 2 now; 1 before. They are truly affectionate. Social. Smarter than I thought. I think if we didn't have these fur ball cats I'd have guinea pigs. Low maintenance. Short lives. Affordable. Don't need a lot of space. Kid friendly.

The problem with Guinea pigs is that they're really not that low maintenance. If their cages aren't cleaned often, they really really stink.

But, as you say, they're really sweet, and when you hold and pet them, they purr. Great feedback. If you give them "floor time" to run around, they're great.

There's a really cool series of books about a "Fluffy" the guinea pig. These helped my kid to read (this is an aside btw). I just loved them. Good memories there.

I think I'd rather deal with the stink cleaning a guinea pig enclosure than this cat litter. I've never had allergies or breathing problems til the last few years. We started with the cats in 2000. These 3 cats here are now making me ill, itch & I'm sure it's d/t the dust from the litter & the flying fur that I can never seem to vacuum up. NEVER again will I have a cat. And I love cats so much.
