I guess the Chinese moving in don't like the idea of freedom.

Owners drop Freedom Tower name for new WTC skyscraper

From Chris Kokenes
CNN

NEW YORK (CNN) -- The agency that owns the space where the World Trade Center towers stood is freeing itself of the term "freedom" to describe the signature skyscraper replacing the buildings destroyed on September 11, 2001.

The change from Freedom Tower was revealed Thursday at a news conference where the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey announced the signing of the first commercial lease in the building to a Chinese company. The building is expected to be completed in late 2013.

The Confederate soldier was peculiar in that he was ever ready to fight, but never ready to submit to the routine duty and discipline of the camp or the march. The soldiers were determined to be soldiers after their own notions, and do their duty, for the love of it, as they thought best. Carlton McCarthy

They should call it the Freedom Crater for all we have seen for the past eight years.

There is a line we cross when we go from "I will believe it when I see it" to "I will see it when I believe it".

It was a silly and jingoistic name. Glad to see it go.

I like Deficit Tower. Or The Bubble Building.
In my defense, I was left unsupervised.

HOLY CARP!!!
The WTC was destroyed in an act of aggression against the US.
I can understand if many Americans feel the name of the replacement would hold significant symbolism.
I can understand the outrage if a Chinese company got the name changed from Freedom Tower.

I agree the original choice of the name Freedom Tower was yucky jingoism but to have it dropped at the request of communists (who are now successful capitalists) is an big ouchie.

Good thing that nobody was around when they forged the "Liberty" Bell.

I am glad the old name World Trade Center is coming back. I am glad that they are able to rent it to a constituent of the world trade community. How appropriate!!

Perhaps not the best time to build new office space in the city, but I am sure we will grow into it eventually. :)

Yep. Forget the corny, jingoistic names. "World Trade Center" works for me.

(Plus, it's a great big FU to the terrorists. It says, "Not only do you matter so little that we've gone ahead and rebuilt it, we've even given it the old name, and what you've done will not be memorialized in the name of the buildings that you destroyed.")

Yes, "Freedom Tower" is an embarrassing lowest common denominator type name. I'm glad we're getting rid of it.

Interesting point, Frank.
As a good person, I implore you to do as I, a good person, do. Be good. Do NOT be bad. If you see bad, end bad. End it in yourself, and end it in others. By any means necessary, the good must conquer the bad. Good people know this. Do you know this? Are you good?

Who's Unpatriotic?
Quote:

This arresting headline from the Associated Press came across the wires today, and was widely repeated, for example on Yahoo's main page: "Critics call WTC tower name change unpatriotic." The article, of course, refers to the announcement by New York's Port Authority that the building now under construction at the World Trade Center site will be called One World Trade Center rather than the Freedom Tower.

Intuitively, this seemed to be an unlikely claim, so I read the article carefully. The headline is justified by this assertion: "Critics called the name drop an unpatriotic shedding of symbolism by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey." The article, however, quotes not a single critic who said any such thing.

The AP reporter identifies three "critics" by name: former Governor George Pataki, who wrote an op-ed for the New York Post, and editorials in the Post and the New York Daily News. All three were indeed critical of the name change, but none called it "unpatriotic" or anything remotely close to unpatriotic.
