I have a very nasty basement. It's so bad only go down there when I have to do laundry. I recently made the decision to have EverDry come and water proof the basement and shore up a bowing foundation wall to the tune of "$gulp!". However, the basement should be dry and suitable for finishing when the job is done. I want to buy a shop vac to clean the basement. I know there are good ones and not so good ones and I also know they can be cheap or they can be expensive. I don't mind spending money if I'm getting my money's worth. I want one that can suck a golf ball through a garden hose. I suppose I could use my old Hoover but the amount of basement carp will probably kill it, so I'm thinking shop vac. Got any suggestions on brands, horse power, gadgets, whatever? |

Look for brand names (i.e. Shop-Vac) and then look at the power of the motor. Why do you necessarily need a ShopVac for a basement that is going to be dry? |

That's a good question, Mik. I have three animals, so there's always a lot of pet hair and my basement has sixty years of "dirt". It's going to take much more than a once over to clean it. I just figured a shop vac would be more efficient than a regular household vacuum. Frank, my ex told me that once so I thought it was applicable here. And yes, he was an idiot. |

Fein makes the best shop-vacs I've ever used. Super quiet, and very strong. They have a couple different models. My personal preference is for the one that has the more narrow, yet very long hose. http://www.feinus.com/p/newdustfree/vacmain.htm |

Any decent vacuum will pick up pet hair or dirt. If you have water or sawdust or lots of big chuncks a Shop-Vac is of use. It sounds to me like you probably have some mildew and gunk on the walls and floor that will need to be scrubbed off. I remember my dad's basement. |
