HOLY CARP!!!
|
One programmer from my group, one programmer from the firmware group, and a marketing person. I think they were more performance based than downsizing based, but the economy didn't help. The guy in my group had just bought a house a year ago for 530k, now it's worth about 400 apparently. So there's another foreclosure, I would assume. |

things are grim everywhere I opened a statement last week that informed me my income is now half what it was when I retired in 2007. I may have to try to find some work if it gets any worse. |

It's brutal out there. My county has an unemployment rate above 10%. It's like living in France.

Civilisation, I vaguely realized then - and subsequent observation has confirmed the view - could not progress that way. It must have a greater guiding principle to survive. To treat it as a carcase off which each man tears as much as he can for himself, is to stand convicted a brute, fit for nothing better than a jungle existence, which is a death-struggle, leading nowhither. I did not believe that was the human destiny, for Man individually was sane and reasonable, only collectively a fool. I hope the gunner of that Hun two-seater shot him clean, bullet to heart, and that his plane, on fire, fell like a meteor through the sky he loved. Since he had to end, I hope he ended so. HOLY CARP!!!

The guy in my group who got fired was very bright, but he had some personality/emotional issues that kept him from being a good performer. He seemed to be afraid of tackling problems, kept to his very narrow area of alleged expertise which became a hammer for every problem whether it resembled a nail or not. Trying to communicate with him on technical stuff was almost impossible, he would go off on meaningless tangents that weren't grounded in the problem that needed to be solved. I think he was afraid to think about things he didn't understand, which is a shame since he was one of the brigher people in the group, he could have understood if he'd been willing to try. Then there was his propensity to send politically incorrect emails to virtually the entire company. That was bizarre and someone pretty high up apparently got offended once. The firmware guy who was fired was actually a group leader two years ago. But he had a history of not being amiable, lots of peolpe didn't like him, and his performance was not good, so a year ago he was demoted and a guy who used to report to him got his job. The higher-ups hoped this would make him quit, but he needed the paycheck so he didn't. A few weeks ago he came up to me late in the day and talked to me about being depressed. Beyond the problems at work, he was having problems with his landlord too, and said that if the stars aligned right, there was a conceivable way that he could be jobless and homeless within a few months. I hope he's able to find another job soon. |

Heh, well I took the day off today just in case... Actually I'd planned to take the day off anyway but today's probably not a bad time not to be there. But the chances of that sort of thing happening are vanishingly small, compared to say dying in a car accident on the way to work. |

Layoffs abound at my work too, Horace. At least once a month but mostly twice. Has been that way since December. Meanwhile, I keep getting more job responsibility. No increase in pay though, and quite frankly I have no ties to this place whatsoever. I could take it or leave it at this point. |

Job responsibility = job security, as long as the things you're responsible for are important and as long as it's skilled/specialized work. But I'm sort of with you, I wouldn't mind a government funded sabatical. But I don't think it'll happen. |

Random FML: Today, I was fired by my boss in front of my coworkers. It would have been nice if I could have left the building before they started celebrating. FML The founding of the bulk of the world's nation states post 1914 is based on self-defined nationalisms. The bulk of those national movements involve territory that was ethnically mixed. The foundation of many of those nation states involved population movements in the aftermath. When the only one that is repeatedly held up as unjust and unjustifiable is the Zionist project, the term anti-semitism may very well be appropriate. - P*D | |

When did the word layoff go from being temporary to permanent? Growing up, when my father was laid off, it was always a temporary thing, usually 2-3 weeks while they reoutfitted a tank, or changed some equipment. When a company let people go, they called it "letting people go", none of this layoff crap. IMO, there's three different categories: Layoff-A temporary work stoppage Let Go/Released/Downsized - When the position has been eliminated through no fault of the employee Fired-Get your ass out of here. (It sounds like Horace's co-workers were fired, and not just let go) |
| The problem with having an open mind is that people keep trying to put things in it. | |

I've always understood "laid-off" to be permanent, in the sense of your definition of "let go/released/downsized". I thought "furloughed" was more like a temporary condition, at least where I work. |

That's a good point. I recall "lay off" being temporary as well, but these days it doesn't seem to have that connotation. This was mostly a downsizing. 50 people were let go from the manufacturing unit. But I think the company had a short list of people they wanted to let go when it was convenient to do so, and so the three people from the science/engineering division were laid off as well. |
