New Gun; Bersa UC .45acp

My new Bersa "Thunder" ultra-compact .45acp. This is going to be my concealed carry weapon. It's a little more contoured than the Glock, so it's a bit more comfortable to wear, and a little easier to conceal. I've got a FOBUS paddle holster for it. :)

It's Argentinian made, and Bersa is the firearm carried all over South America by policia and various militaries. It fires really nice. The recoil is more akin to a Ruger .38 that I used to have, and the quality of the components is comparable with that of Walther.

How does one get a concealed carry permit, is it hard? Does it differ by state? Are they available in all states / most states / only a few states?

Pardon my lack of googling!

It varies by state. For instance, I've heard that in New Jersey, it's virtually impossible to get a license to carry.

In some states like Alabama, there is no licensing or permit requirement. Buy the gun, strap it on, and away you go.

Here in Tennessee, I had to attend a four-hour class at the end of which, was a written test. Then I had to spend four hours at the range, qualifying. (Truth be told, we knocked the range out in about an hour, and then did the class, took the test, and voila: We were done in a total of 5 hours.)

The class cost me $90. From there, I took the class certificate to the DMV where I filled out an application, got my picture taken, paid $115, and from there, they gave me a serial number and a phone number to call. At that point, I had to call and give my social security number and the code number on the application. They told me where to go to get fingerprinted. I had to get all ten of my fingerprints scanned. The background check has started, and providing they turn up nothing, (which of course, they won't), I should have my permit by... May, I think.

Looks nice. Looks like it has a 3" barrel. Consider lighter ammo. The 230 grain tends to foul up my piece. The lighter ammo still has the stopping power with the higher muzzle velocity of a 3" barrel. Hydra-shoks can be gotten in 185 or 200 grain as well. The lighter ammo works like a charm.

I may do that. So far, after 200 rounds through it, it hasn't missed a lick, but if the lighter ammo will do it, so much the better. And yeah... When I load it for actually carrying it, Hydra-shoks all the way. :thumb:

Interesting, thanks Frank! I wonder how many people I walk past on the street are carrying.

(I mean other than in Oakland, where everybody does.)

You know, most people that are carrying, (unless it's an open-carry state), you'd never know it.

Here in TN, I could carry it in the open. I doubt if I ever will. I'm not going to alter my whole wardrobe to conceal my weapon. If someone knows what they're looking for, they'll know I'm packin.

I think the average person is pretty oblivious, and most people, even if they think they see the outline of something, will assume that it's a cell phone, or something. People tend not to see what they don't want to see.

I can do 200 rounds without a problem even with 230 grain ammo but it seems the accuracy drops off if I force many 230 grain rounds through quickly. Maybe the the Bursa doesn't have that problem, I don't know, but mine does. Of course, I should hope I never have to fire that many rounds quickly.

Well, I am needing more practice. For whatever reason, I'm firing low and to the left. On a human silhouette, I'm shootin' the nuts offa' 'em!

I need to adjust my trigger pull. I'm used to firing a rifle, and a handgun is a bit different.

(But this is at 25-yards out.)

Thanks, Mark! :)

The argument can be made that the government and law enforcement isn't allowed to infringe on a person's right to open carry. However, that's a pretty thin argument. Technically correct, I suppose...

It was not uncommon to see people openly carrying guns in my home town when I was growing up. There were even some kids in school who lived on a ranch who carried them.

Yep. Where I grew up, too. The community was mostly agricultural and ranching, and lots of people openly carried them in an a holster, just like they did in the Old West.

They were also for sale in the local drug store right next to the Polaroid cameras.

My wife has no problems with guns but then she has had training on fully automatic weapons. It's a Chinese thing.

I already convinced my wife that we needed a dog. I'd say I've pushed my luck far enough. :lol2:

Man.... I picked up a really bitchin' Galco shoulder holster for the Bursa, today. Incredible quality. Galco is the company that designed the shoulder holster that Don Johnson wore on Miami Vice, and this holster is the exact same style.

For most everyday situations, I have the FOBUS paddle holsters, but for when I'm on the motorcycle, or when I'm wearing a sports-coat or jacket:

a person who wishes to legally carry a concealed firearm in another state can apply for and receive a non-resident permit from Florida, or another state which issues non-resident permits. Florida is typically the state of choice because Florida has been quite aggressive about seeking the widest possible reciprocity with other states.

From: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Concealed_carry_in_the_United_States

Further down the page, though:

Quote:

No-issue

A no-issue jurisdiction, within the context of gun law, is one that does not allow any private citizen to carry a concealed handgun. The term refers to the fact that no concealed carry permits will be issued (or recognized).

As of December 2007[update] in the United States, only Illinois, Wisconsin and the District of Columbia are no-issue jurisdictions. Nebraska and Kansas have passed concealed carry laws which took effect on January 1, 2007. Wisconsin, Kansas, Virginia and Nebraska all permit unlicensed open carry, subject to county and municipal restrictions.[14] The District of Columbia is also "no-issue", and until District of Columbia v. Heller did in fact forbid possession or ownership of a handgun within the District, except those grandfathered in before the 1976 ordinance went into effect.

I don't care about carrying a gun, I'd just like to be able to buy a bottle of wine at Costco. That's illegal in my state.
