Went to the range today with a colleague from work (first time for me). He brought his 9mm Smith & Wesson, and we rented a Glock 30. We fired the 9mm first - first time I've fired a pistol so took a little getting used to. Then we switched to the Glock. I didn't really notice any difference in the way it fired, or the recoil, but we seemed to be more accurate (if that's what you could call it) with the Glock. To me, neither had a very good sighting system - perhaps my eyesight doesn't help. Next visit we'll rent something else. Don't know how you can carry one of these things concealed - worries me handling the weapon with the safety on and no magazine in it!

There was a San Diego cop in the next lane - he was shooting a revolver which took a half inch diameter shell. Someone said it was a S&W 500, but I don't know that for a fact (the box of ammo suggested deer hunting ??). The concussion from it is something else - especially when you don't know it's about to be fired - and flames exit the barrel when it's fired.

Interesting day!

I have always wanted a Kimber Ultra Raptor II but that Bersa looks sweet and the price is certainly a lot easier to swallow.

Kimber is nice, too. What caliber is that, Mark? .380?

1hp: handguns are a lot less accurate at distance, and yeah, the sighting system isn't the greatest. The gun the cop was firing sounds interesting...

Mark, the Bersa is an awesome price, but the quality is on the order of Walther. Very very nice weapon... The more I fire it, the more I like it. :thumb:

Yep. I've done a lot of browsing around on the Internet. There are few (if any) bad reviews of Bersa weapons of any caliber. :thumb:

Wow, that makes me almost want to get a concealed carry permit.

1HP, I think I might have seen some of those .500 cal. pistols in a gun store the other day. They caught my eye because it looked like I could stick my thumb down the barrel. The shopowner said they were normally bought and carried by guides that are concerned about running into bear. Told me a story of a rafting crew in Alaska coming around the bend and there was a huge bear in the middle of the river. The guide pulled out the pistol and fired into the air and the bear took off.

I will be looking into a Bersa for sure.

The Bersa .380 is very very popular, but you can't get one. As soon as dealers get one, it gets sold, and .380 ammo is very scarce. The .45 is nice enough, though.

Yep. Very comfortable. Concealable with an evening jacket, a regular coat, or motorcycle jacket. :)

I do not want a .380 because I love .45 and I already have the dies, cartridges, primers and bullets for loading them.

Plus nothing else hits like a .45. Oh sure a .50 would put it to shame on that front but then the size of the gun goes up dramatically as does the recoil and thus accuracy IMO.

.45 is the best caliber IMO.

You and I see eye-to-eye on that, Mark. For the size of the weapon and sheer ballistic knock-down power, the best power/size ratio package is the .45acp.

People say to go with hollow-points or hydra-shoks. I'll stick with good ol' fashioned 230 gr. ball ammo, though. A .45 is going to tear some sh't DOWN!

If I were carrying a 9mm or a .38, then I might consider going to hollow-points or hydra-shoks, but otherwise, I don't see the point in spending the exhorbitant amounts of money on ammo.

Usually just showing your gun is enough to stop a would be attacker.

But yelling, "HEY ****ER! THIS HERE IS A .45!" is even better!

(That's usually me   )

How much did that cost, if you don't mind me asking, Frank? As i was telling you, I was looking to get a licence for a gun just to use at a shooting range. It's probably going to be a shotgun or a rifle licence that i'll get (to use for bird shooting aswell) and was wondering how much it's going to cost.

Any favourites on shotguns?

Kincaid, it's Quentin Tarantino's, "Four Rooms" Um.. Definitely NOT "family viewing"

MP, for shotguns, Mossberg is probably the best, while being relatively cheap.

For my Bersa, I guess I paid around $400USD.

Mossberg for me as well although I used to have a Winchester 1200 Defender that was really nice. Sadly, useless for hunting birds.

Oh, and Frank, that is a good price for a weapon like that. I really like the grips.
