The WSJ may be able to get away with it, but Newsday??? http://www.reuters.com/article/newsOne/idUSTRE51P71W20090226 |

It will fail. I suspect WaPo and NYT will go this route eventually, and will be successful at it. But I can't see it going much beyond that. A couple of other papers may survive because rich owners will keep them around as an ego booster even if they lose money. |

I'd heard about this several weeks ago. WaPo ans NYT are looking at going this route, maybe a little sooner than you might expect. I doubt they'll have much success, however, due to the blogosphere. I expect you'll find more and more people getting there news from Huffpo and Drudge. For good and ill. |

NYT used to charge for "premium" content, and then dropped the charge, because they couldn't attract enough readership. That happened only a year or two ago. For them to reverse course again would be surprising, to say the least. |

They had too little behind the fence. Only their columnists and historic search. They will go the way of FT and WSJ and put most of their content behind the fence. |

They were too timid. They need to be bold. Eventually, events will force them into boldness. |

It'll be interesting to see what happens to the Trib, the LATimes and the Chronicle. I think they'll get purchased by rich egomaniacs who will absorb the losses. I can't see them making the switch to paid content successfully. |

Cut me some slack, it was early, and I'd just gotten up from bed for the first time in over 24 hours (exempting trips to the bathroom. Stomach flus suck.). |
