I am thinking of getting a nice CD of Irish Music for St Patrick's Day. I say this every year, and never do it. Any recommendations? Something traditional, and something fun like this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=46EXY4oP1Do. |

The Dubliners were only good when Ronnie Drew - who died last year RIP - was singing. I would get a mix of ballad type music - Cristie Moore, Dubliners, even the Pogues, etc. - some traditional music - Chieftains for example - and Ceili band music - i highly recommend the Kilfenora Ceili Band. |

Please please PLEASE, for the love of God, don't get a CD that has any of the following: Whiskey in the Jar The Pub with no Beer Finnegan's Wake The Parting Glass Seven Drunken Nights Johnny at the Door Wild Rover A Begging I Will Go Actually, don't listen to me. I just don't like St. Patrick's Day is all. In fact I don't even like Irish bars. Our Irish bars that is. Swarms of half-drunk yuppies paying 3 dollars too much for "imports" (did you know half the sh!t is bottled here in New Jersey?), and when one of the eight most stereotypical Irish songs ever written comes in on the speakers (or worse, gets started up by the acoustic-playing flunkie on stage who makes it impossible to hear your own ****ing voice), all of a sudden it's, "oh I know this one!" Of course you do you asshole, you've heard it thirty-eight times already, from this establishment alone. Yes. "Who the **** is Alice" indeed. It's fun to say "****" in public isn't it. Sit the **** down why don't you. Sorry. I just really don't like St. Patrick's Day. |

You need to go to a proper Irish bar. I'll take you on a tour - starting in Woodside, Queens at midnight, and ending up on Fordham Road in the Bronx at 6 am ("psst, where do they do the after hours around here?"). |

Oh, I've been to Irish bars in the Bronx and Queens, sir. They were indeed the real deal. Not so much 'round these parts. |

Yeah, but did you sing "Rule Britania" at the top of your lungs while you were there? |

What's worse than that: the term "African-American" generally has a lot more credibility to it than "Irish-American." |

HOLY CARP!!!
|
I had a fun lunch in an Irish pub in Boston on St. Paddy's day a few years ago. We had corned beef and cabbage and Guinness. Good music too. Of course, we did leave before most of the drunken revelers showed up. But lunch (and the beer) was faboo! |
