Poll: Obama Popularity Lags Bush After First Month

The media may be smitten with President Barack Obama, but recent Gallup poll results show Americans giving the new president lower marks after one month in the White House than former President George W. Bush earned at the same point in his administration.

Heading into this week’s address to Congress, the Gallup figures showed 59 percent of Americans approved of Obama’s efforts so far, while 25 percent disapproved, and 16 percent had no opinion. According to PollingReport.com, President Bush had a 62 percent approval rating one month into his first term, with 21 percent disapproving, and 17 percent having no opinion.

“For the first time since Gallup began tracking Barack Obama’s presidential job approval rating on Jan. 21, fewer than 60 percent of Americans approve of the job he is doing as president,” the Gallup report reads. The drop below 60 percent approval was fueled largely by a drop in satisfaction among independents, Gallup pollsters added.

Now that a month's gone by, I think its safe to say we're looking at a failed presidency and a tarnished legacy.

Pretty amusing this right wing attempt to show how Obama's popularity is failing. Oh, noes!! His popularity rating dropped by 1 point in the Gallup poll!!!

The comparison between W's and O's popularity at this juncture is totally absurd. First of all, as Jon points out, who even cares about popularity ratings at this juncture except for sore losers. But if you really want to obsess over it, consider this. When W waltzed into the job, the country was on an upswing. Contrast that with the mess that O inherited. I'd like to see anyone else do any better given the present sad state of affairs in this country. 59% approval rating sounds pretty damn good to me given the circumstances.

Obama Popularity still riding high

When Bush took office your party faithful were crying that he stole the election and was not the legitimate president. It is difficult to imagine how Obama could do worse, but he seems to have managed.

This is just the effect of all the people who just figured out that Obama isn't really going to pay their mortgage, and buy them a new car.

Again, who cares? I sure don't remember even thinking about popularity polls at that point. Also, as to your point, it might just indicate that Dems are a lot more forgiving than Pubs (not to mention patriotic and willing to give their new president a chance), hmmm? So, carry on, don't let me interfere with your obsessing.

You have to be effing kidding me, kathy.

Dems more forgiving? "Patriotic and willing to give their new president a chance"? It's their guy that's in power, of COURSE they're going to cut him an endless amount of slack!!

When I think back on all the crap I heard about Bush at the start of his term, the whole "he stole the election" bull****... I can't believe you're taking these words of yours seriously.

It is a long way to go for Obama, I don't think anything counts for him except the economy--if it continues to tank--he'll be one term--and a bad one at that. If it turns around with the stimulus package--he's going to be king.

I just don't think it is a very goood package, but the economy might turn around in spite of Obama--then he'll be what they call lucky.

I think you're right, Tom. Timing will also be an issue for the stimulus as far as what it means for Obama's reputation. If indeed it does make improvements, come 2012 the story might be "what have you done for me lately."

What issues do you have with the stimulus package if you don't mind my asking?

It's a little too "long term."

Major construction projects take years to get off of the ground. Same thing with scientific research. Things like renewable energy--it's a good idea, but it's not stimulus. Neither is feeding the hungry or law enforcement.

I like the middle and lower class tax cuts and the tax cuts for small business and companies suffering losses, but over all the plan isn't emmediate enough.

No, I am not kidding.

Count me among those who yelled and screamed about his stealing the election. I firmly believe that he did (thinks in part to the Supremes and some shady players in OH and Diebold). And for that reason, I would have been among those who gave him a low approval rating. However, I was among a distinct minority. His relatively high approval rating shortly after his election would not have been possible had it not been for a lot of "forgiving" Dems who were willing to give him a chance.
The reverse hasn't seemed to hold true for the Pubs and Obama, does it?

Am I the only one here who can't really tell the difference between Republicans and Democrats? They really are all the freaking same to me. Maybe it's the funny accents you people have, but it's just like this endless parade of suits with insincere smiles, and pretending to be your friend and being a regular guy, when none of them, ABSOLUTELY FREAKING NONE OF THEM, would give you the time of day if he didn't want your stinking vote.

OK, maybe I'm a little cynical.

Oh yeah. That's what you all did - were forgiving and gave him a chance.

The only question is are you delusional or just dishonest.

John, that is not true. I have given you the time of day, and will do so again now (it's 10:26 am here) and I have never asked for your vote. OK, so you don't live in my district, but that doesn't stop us in the great USA now that we have ACORN.
