HOLY CARP!!!
I may be living out of the country for 2 years or so. As you may remember, I JUST bought a new car. It would not be in my best interest to sell it at this point, and I'm pretty sure I can manage to continue paying my monthly loan payments while I'm gone. The car will be able to sit at my parents' house, and my dad said he'd run it for me when it needed it.

My concern is if it's just plain not a good idea to let a car be run so minimally for that long a time. Since it won't be insured, it's not like it could be taken out for occasional highway drives. I'm guessing my dad would let it run for a while in the yard, and then maybe just take it down the street a bit.

I don't want to have to sell this car now, but if it's going to be unhealthy for the car to sit so much then maybe it wouldn't be worth it to hold on to it. . .

If you have a loan on the car you are normally required as part of the terms to keep up the insurance. Is it a new car?

If you're gonna go that route, he or your mom may -- it would be best -- rotate the cars they use for their commute.
I cite irreconcilable differences.

Talk to your insurance agent, see if you can crank your deductibles way up and your coverage to minimum. Also check Progressive. They can be very reasonable.

I immediately thought of the expense of insurance, license plates (or tabs as we call them here), and basic maintenance. Even while in storage it will still need some service. Would you really be better off keeping it and paying all that, or just selling it before you go?

I've only submitted my application so far, and received the next batch of forms to complete before my interview (not yet scheduled. . . the girl who will do it is out of town right now).

I'm hoping for a something in South America, so I can work more on my language skills. Various reasons why I'd do this. . . my life is way too comfortable right now, and too much about me; I want international experience that is going to be a solid commitment (2 yrs), and not just a few months that'll allow me only to get my feet wet before it's time to leave; it's hard to study international development theory without getting in some practice; empathy, not sympathy. . .

I hear applications have increased dramatically since the Administration change. We'll see!

That's what I'm trying to figure out. It's a tough call. :(

I don't know if I can afford this if I have to keep insuring it (which I guess I probably will have to do). *siiiiigh* More phone calls to make.

What servicing would I need to do for it? I hadn't thought it would need any of that.

There is not much sense in paying interest, insurance and maintenance on a depreciating asset while you can't use it. You'll lose more than you would by just selling it. BUT - if you continue to make payments to yourself in the form of CDs while you are gone, you can buy one for cash when you come back, or nearly so.

The founding of the bulk of the world's nation states post 1914 is based on self-defined nationalisms. The bulk of those national movements involve territory that was ethnically mixed. The foundation of many of those nation states involved population movements in the aftermath. When the only one that is repeatedly held up as unjust and unjustifiable is the Zionist project, the term anti-semitism may very well be appropriate. - P*D

Oil changes? After the two years, it would likely need a new battery, new tires unless you put it up on blocks as Jolly said, belts and hoses would need to at least be checked, new filters likely needed. There might be other things, but that's what pops to mind first.

Get back in here and help, Jolly. :)

Good points, Mik. I hate the thought of losing out all that money by selling the car now and then having to pay off the loan, but I also hate the thought of having to worry about the car while I'm gone.

Put the proceeds from the sale of the car into an interest-earning account. Have your money working for you, even at a low interest rate, while you are gone, instead of having the value of the car eroding with bills to pay for it.

If it was only for two months, I'd advise to keep it, but two years ..........

Some cities require that the vehicles on the property all be licensed, insured, and operable. They will not allow stored vehicles, especially not for two years. If your parents live outside the city, it may not be an issue. It depends on the local ordinances, in town or out of town.

Well, the proceeds of the sale would go right into paying off the loan. There's currently just under $14,000 total (including interest). I haven't reviewed my papers yet, but I'm assuming that even if I pay it all off in a few months, I'm still going to have to pay a lot of that interest.

Based on Craigslist offerings and Kelley Blue Book, I'm guessing I could only get about $10-11K for my car (if I'm lucky. . . it's not a popular car). That's a couple thousand I'd have to pay out of pocket to pay off the loan!
