Just the tip of the ice berg. Universities have become too much about big business, and less about academics (some refer to it as the college industrial complex). I believe we will see the implosion, if not outright failure of more than one University over th next year or two. Further, I think athletics programs will shrink as well. Stanford has announced layoffs and cutbacks in response to an anticipated loss of $5 million in revenues in athletics over the next 3 years, and have not ruled out eliminating teams. Stanford announces cuts in athletics department There is much discussion locally about the future of the San Diego State University football team, with most in favour of disbanding it as it is costing the University too much. |

Western Washington University just cut its football program. It was losing $250,000 a year, and they figured it would save $450,000 a year if it was gone. Some programs do fine (I imagine LSU is one of them, I know U of Washington is) - their games bring in enough money to support the sport. |
