It's been that bad for a while, it's just been hidden behind smoke and mirrors.

Pretending, for example, that the costs of the Iraq war don't count.

It was not that long ago that the entire federal budget was not as big as the current deficit!

We need to oust these people who are so irresponsible.

No kidding. That was what I was trying to say in the other (Space Exploration) thread. I am just too horrified to think about anything else except seeing gov't balance the budget instead of spend, spend, spend.

It's is unfathomable to me that the government thinks it must continue to grow when everyone else in the country is cutting back.

Nope! Not the government! It must grow at all costs!

It disturbs me to no end.

The US Government debt is $10.802 trillion as of Feb 19 2009. That is the amount owed by the US Government to holders of US debt instruments.

The annual US budget deficit declined from $318 billion in 2005 to $162 billion in 2007, but increased to $455 billion in 2008.

As for Quirt's comment about Iraq - I'll wager Obama has created more deficit damage in 1 month of the Presidency, than the Iraq war did over several years.

Because of the accounting gimmicks that were used to keep the numbers down.

If you don't count certain things, then it's an awful lot easier to make the numbers look smaller.

For example, the Iraq war costs were routinely kept out of budget projections.

Yes, but at this point Bush's Iraq war costs are known entities, not projections.

They are still using smoke and mirrors by keeping SSI off budget which is a hell of a lot more than what we spend on the Iraq war. Or should I say, now, Iraq peace. In fact, the only way they (the Obama Administration) can say they will halve the deficit is by assuming that the spending on Iraq will go on at the same level into 2019. Pretty convenient reason for bringing that item "on-budget".

There is a line we cross when we go from "I will believe it when I see it" to "I will see it when I believe it".

Really?

What's the known number for 2009?

How about 2010?
