Sorry, I'm sure this has been covered around here before.

I grew up with Ashkenazy w/Ormandy, and think its great, but on vinyl, dont see it on CD. I have Rach plays Rach on CD, and its awful. :hair: (bad recording technology, and performance ideals change)

I scoured Amazon looking for what might be good. Argerich of course is very well received, but she takes the sissy ossia cadenza, and I need the big chords one. I chose the Kissin w/Ozawa, because the reviews were good and I do like fresh voices these days. But now I'm listening to it, and it sux. Opening is SO slow, whole thing so uninspired, just boring beyond belief, aside from a few sensitive moments. Its playing right now, and I dont even care to finish it, its that lack luster.

Actually, I gave this cd as a gift, and now I feel horrible.

Which recording does it for you? I need ideas on where else to look.

My two favorites are Byron Janis (2nd/3rd concertos on one CD) and Horowitz (with 2nd sonata and a few other pieces).

But I was somewhat obsessed in high school, and bought 10 different recordings, and they're all good. Earl Wild's is weird, because of all the cuts, but what he didn't cut is really great. Ashkenazy is the first I heard, and he's probably the most straight-forward.

There's also an awesome VHS of Horowitz with Zubin Mehta:

I've got 30 or so recordings of the Rach 3. Personal favorites include Gavrilov and a rather unknown artist from Cuba by the name of Jorge Luis Prats. Gavrilov plays it the way I think I think Rachmaninoff would have liked to have heard it played. Prats takes the last movement like a crazy man and Batiz lead his musicians on an insane ride.

Rodriguez also did a couple of fine recordings.

I too was disappointed in Kissin. I though Volodos would have been better than he did. They both have the technique to tear this work apart - yet seemed to want to play it conservatively.

What about Gavrilov and Muti? I love Gavrilov. He's so quirky.

The "Rach 3" is easily my favorite piece of musical anything. Aqua actually introduced it to me in 2003 and since then I've listened to it hundreds of times. Literally hundreds. While driving, while running. Heck, it's the only classical concert I'll go to and I've traveled as far away as Poughkeepsie, NY to see it live (by Olga Kern that time). I've tried various recordings, but my favorite is actually the one that I first heard. For years I didn't know who did it, or when.....just that it was the best.

Well I just spent over an hour tracking this down, and this is it. This seems to be a high-def re-release of the original album that has my favorite version.

Anyway, it's by the Tbilsi Symphony Orchestra, I think the pianist is Nato Ts'Vereli, and I think it was originally recorded in 1997.

The reason I like this version the best, is it's not only the cleanest version I've heard...but it's not too fast, not too slow. Just right. The emotion that comes out of the notes heard is better than any version I've heard, and it's mixed wonderfully, just the right amount of piano vs symphony. I also like this version of the cadenza better than any other version I've heard. I believe it's the "Ossia" version and man when they get into those BIG FAT CHORDS.......music does NOT get better.

Best. Version. Ever.

PS. I have the mp3 if you want to let you borrow it.

I think Andre Previn is a much under-appreciated conductor. I haven't heard his Ashekenazy #3 recording.

Ashkenazy 4 Rach's had been "reprinted" on CD lots of times and very cheap.

You might give Nikolai Lugansky's recording a listen. He recorded the complete concerto and Pag Rhapsody set for Warner Classics. I heard him play Rach 3 in concert last year with the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra. Without doubt the best live performance I've ever heard. Spectacular playing!

I've seen many Ashkenazy rachs on CD, but never the one I had on vinyl in particular. FINALLY found it: http://www.jpophelp.com/scripts/newsite/proddetails.asp?listid=JPN-BVCC-38297&showname=1

That was my first, and loved it. Shees, why is it so obscure? Well, I know one's first hearing does become the yardstick. I probably like it more than the performance merits.
