The company I work for, Design Roofing, was lucky enough to get the primary roofing contract for the Millennium Waters Olympic Village, which is an enormous complex for the athletes and other people involved with the 2010 Olympic Games. This is what the finished project will look like:![]() After the games, the buildings will become dedicated low-cost housing zones. A few crews from Design Roofing have been working there since last Summer, but I just spent my first day there today. It's cool to be contributing to such a celebrated venue, one of the biggest sites in Canada, and by far the most publicized. |

I'm really glad to hear you and your company, get to work on this. Whole lot of other construction projects in Vancouver have been put on hold, so good for you guys. I'm also happy to hear there's a push to get this done; we're in so deep, we have to finish it. Are the green roofs (original plan was 50%, I think) still going ahead? I thought there were insurance worries, and figured they'd ditched that idea. Give us the real scoop!! As for the low-cost housing, I have to say I'm might sceptical. I know the agreement was for 250 units classified as 'social housing', but with the enormous cost overruns, I have to think everybody is going to want the most money they can get, fast. The whole idea of low cost housing on waterfront property in Vancouver is a tad hard to swallow, to be honest. The bulk of the units will be sold for 600,000 to 3.4 million. cbc article Hope this weather holds for you guys; it must be great working on roofing on days like today and yesterday.....sunshine! |

Sue, thanks for the link. Those numbers are far higher than I expected. I was just repeating what I heard from my foreman. We are preparing the roofs for grass, though, so I assume they will indeed be green. There is a definite push for us to get these buildings covered, but I'm not worried. My crew is currently working on the leftmost building, just beside the red building with the pitch roof, and in 2 days we have it water-tight. Dewey, as far as I've been told, we have just about the entire site to complete ourselves, minus a few buildings in the center. There is one other roofing organization on the project, but they suck. Honestly, I watched one guy spend 5 minutes cutting open a paper bag, and they somehow manage to make a one-man job take three people to pull off. AL, I'll try to remember my camera tomorrow. The site is really a...sight. |

Very cool that you are working on this, NAK. I love the idea of the grass, and would really love to know that it works out! The flat roof concept here in Vancouver has always struck me as pretty stupid (we bought a house with a flat roof ). Living in a place that rains a lot, it's not the best thing. Be really interesting to see if having x no. of inches of soil and grass will prevent leaks. What happens if it snows again, like this year? Can you shovel snow off of a grass roof? Hope you can take some pictures sometime! Or will the Vanoc people confiscate your camera?

All roofs in Vancouver are green- from the naturally occurring moss that grows on everything in region of the Fraser Delta for a 100 miles inland to Hope BC. |
