I'd believe it would work it if it were $8,333.34 instead.

You really think it will stop at 75 billion?

More seriously: I've recently read a lot of stuff from guys like Ludwig von Mises, Hayek, Rothbarth, and all the other proponents of the Austrian school of economy.

Mises, for example, says that the boom is the disease, and the crisis is the cure, and every attempt to remedy the crisis will only prolong it. I think there is a lot of truth in that.

No, but I'll be glad to accept the $8333.33 and tell them it helped.

I actually like the idea of them paying off all the mortgages for everyone.

Think of the economic stimulation we could do!

I suppose they could just payoff say up to the "super mortgage" or whatever they call them. Like put a cap on it. say, $500,000.00 will be paid per mortgage.

revaluate the housing market, the monetary system, renege on write off the debt, and start over.

It is if I can get my grubby mitts on it. I will go for every nickel I can and consider it a token rebate for all the bucks I'm getting screwed out of for the rest of my life.

Your life's not that long, especially your working life.

He's historical.
The Confederate soldier was peculiar in that he was ever ready to fight, but never ready to submit to the routine duty and discipline of the camp or the march. The soldiers were determined to be soldiers after their own notions, and do their duty, for the love of it, as they thought best. Carlton McCarthy

They're called *jumbo mortgages*.

I like your plan. I have two mortgages. Under your plan, I get 1 million bucks. I hope they send me a check. I'll pay off both of them and with the leftover buckage, I can have a fine time stimulating the economy. Fine cars... fancy yachts... multiple vacations... oh wait... :D

Obama's head of domestic policy was just on TV, and she states that this program will not help speculators, but people who are slightly upside down, have come upon hard times, or have less than 20% equity and cannot refinance. The limits in the average area are $419K, just under $800K in NYC.

So it looks like we're not talking about re-financing or buying down devalued McMansions here. It may actually be a good program.

It might do what it intends to do without rewarding those who do not deserve a hand.

You will counter no doubt that nothing should be done, but that, alas, is not where we live. What remains to be done is to try to take this boondoggle and get some benefit out of it. The 'no plan' train already left the station.

I think if someone is short on the mortgage payment by $300 bucks a month, but otherwise they can afford it, then this sort of program might help them get past bad economic times and be able to keep their homes. A huge swell of home foreclosures won't be good for anyone.

There's only about 75 million homes being mortgaged in the US. That means 1 out of 8 people need to be bailed out?
The problem with having an open mind is that people keep trying to put things in it.
