Is color a turn-off?

HOLY CARP!!!
Without any particular reason, I decided to buy cookies for my boss and coworker on Sunday night. The store had left-over valentine's day cookies on sale - bright red, or bright pink sugar cookies.

So I brought in the bright red cookies, and my boss refused to eat one "because it's red! I've never seen a red cookie before!"

I figured she'd change her mind, so I left the box on her desk and went to do my work. When I came back later to make sure she'd eaten at least one cookie, she confessed to me that she'd picked up the box, turned it upside down, even ventured to smell one of the cookies, but decided not to take one because she had no idea what it would taste like.

Needless to say, my other coworker was very excited and took two.

I remember reading a study some time ago that had people eating a meat-and-potatoes meal under special lighting. After they'd been enjoying the food for a while, the special lighting was turned off, and everyone realized that they'd been eating blue steak and green potatoes (colored with food-dye). Needless to say, they all got sick, and some even tried to throw up!

I say "depends on the food". I've seen some different colored food come out of the back of the refrigerator and I know better than to eat that.

I'd have to see the food in question. I do tend to shy away from food colorings whenever I can.

Should I eat the cookies?

There is a local Cupcake store (seriously - all they do is Cupcakes) that made bright red cupcakes for V-Day. They were supposedly just regular white cake cookies, but I didn't really want to try one, because they were bright red.

If I got one as a gift and the person insisted, though, I would try one.

With cookies they can be any color - although like big al, I chose depends. I think there are probably some foods out there where color would make a difference. Not sure which ones, but I'm sure there is....

yeah cupcakes seem like the new thing. Sort of a trendy yuppie replacement for the donut.

Red meat is not bad for you. Fuzzy green meat is bad for you.

I remember some kid who did a science fair project on food colors. It seems that the most unpalatable color was blue. People could tolerate blue that isn't really blue...like deep purple blue berries, or blue sweet things...icing, blue curacao, blue bomb pops etc, but drew the line at anything else like blue tinted tuna-fish, or blue mac and cheese.

yup. I've heard that putting your food on blue plates can decrease your appetite, or even painting your dining room blue.

I'm turned off by all the silly hybridised veg....the purple and orange cauliflower come to mind. What's that all about? Anything really artificially coloured as well, like neon orange pretend cheese.

Speaking of fuzzy green meat, this is what I am making tonight. Saw it on the Today show and just happen to have all that stuff.

Pork chops with chipotle glazw
The famed chef gives this tasty dish a south of the border-style kick
Jean-Georges Vongerichten
4 portions
INGREDIENTS
Pork chops
4 pork chops
Salt/white pepper, as needed
Olive oil, as needed
Chipotle glaze
1/2 cup sugar moistened with 2 tablespoons of water
2 tablespoons chopped garlic
1 tablespoon ancho chili, toasted and chopped in 1/2 pieces
1 tablespoon chipotle chili, toasted and chopped in 1/2 pieces
1/4 cup plus 2 tablespoons lime juice
1/2 cup lemon juice
1/2 cup orange juice
1 teaspoon salt

DIRECTIONS
Pork chops
Season pork well with salt and rub with olive oil, then grill. Spoon
the chili glaze liberally over the pork to coat well and serve.

Chipotle glaze
Put sugar in a heavy-bottom pot and moisten with enough water to
make the texture of wet sand. Cook over high heat until golden and
add garlic. Cook, stirring until garlic is toasted and golden, then
add chilies. Stir until fragrant, then add juices. Reduce until you
have a sweet and sour glaze, then add salt. Reserve at room temp
until needed.

In Neural Linguistic Programming, the colour blue is used to suppress the appetite. Its all very fascinating stuff. Colour is definitely an important factor, as is scent and taste.

That sauce sounds absolutely amazing. All that lime juice and peppers, yum.
I've only seen dried chipotle chilis, but you wouldn't toast that, so I'm guessing he's using something fresh?

Chipotles are just smoked jalapenos, which would indicate to me they are already cooked. I'm using dried ones and ancho powder. I think it will be fine, but you migt want to reconstitute them in a little water first.
