So the evil GOP agreed to extend the vote so Brown could fly back AFTER his mother's wake and then right back for the funeral? How cruel. Hey Quirt, here's your lunch. Enjoy. ![]() |

Not even close. One of them could have voted in favor to save him the trip, if they knew it was going to pass anyway. As I've said before. |

Quirt, since you insist on being dense and stubborn about this even in your intense wrongness, let me spell it out. This is not a minor bill. This is a big whoopdeedoo, the largest spending bill ever passed. And it is contentious. Since it is so contentious, just which of these evil GOP senators do you think should be the sacrificial lamb who has to go back to his district stating he voted for it so that some other senator could attend a funeral (which he did anyway)? No one is going to remember at election time that it was done for that purpose, and I guarantee his Democratic opponents will use it. You ask the ridiculous, then claim outrage that it is not delivered. |

Let's pretend, just for yucks, that it's a serious question. Just for yucks. So, let's start. How about not insisting on a 60-vote supermajority, and not threatening a filibuster? Then, they wouldn't have to vote in favor of the bill. Naw, couldn't do that. OK, then, how about voting to break the filibuster, but then voting against the bill itself? Naw, couldn't do that. OK, then, how about a GOP Senator who is in a safe state, and doesn't stand a chance of being challenged in 2010? You think someone is going to raise a serious challenge against Richard Shelby in Alabama? John McCain in Arizona? How about Mike Crapo in Idaho? Tom Coburn in Oklahoma? Jim DeMint in South Carolina? There's NO safe seat for Republicans anywhere in the country? And, even if it put them at some personal or party risk (which it wouldn't), there's no one who believes in principle more than politics? Not even McCain? It's not as if it was going to change the outcome, the outcome was pre-ordained, and they all knew it. In short, you're defending them acting like politicians, rather than like human beings. If you're of the opinion that all Republicans are politicians first, and human beings second (or not at all), far be it from me to argue with you about it. |

You live in Fantasyland Quirt. There are no safe states for the GOP at this time, and it may well be there will be no safe states for the Dems in 2010. We've already covered the filibuster thing. The Dems simply wanted to make sure the GOP could not. You're just wrong here Quirt. |

Well, that didn't stop Arlen Specter and my two senators from doing the right thing and voting for it. There are a few good people in the RNC. ------- "When I came back to the cloak room after coming to the agreement a week ago today," said Specter, "one of my colleagues said, 'Arlen, I'm proud of you.' My Republican colleague said, 'Arlen, I'm proud of you.' I said, 'Are you going to vote with me?' And he said, 'No, I might have a primary.' And I said, 'Well, you know very well I'm going to have a primary.'" . . . "I think there are a lot of people in the Republican caucus who are glad to see this action taken without their fingerprints, without their participation," he said. Specter was asked, How many of your colleagues? "I think a sizable number," he said. "I think a good part of the caucus agrees with the person I quoted, but I wouldn't want to begin to speculate on numbers." http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/02/13/specter-republicans-suppo_n_166875.html |

"From doing the right things and voting for it"??? So there is no legitimate political opinions contrary to yours???? That voting against it is the wrong thing? Why not bust out what Obie did and just remind us how "patriotic" they are for voting to give away a trillion dollars to special interests in the name of "stimulus"? |

Not all of them are special interests. Far from it. Local municipalities and government projects are getting billions from this. |

Well, I am glad "not all of them are special interests", but the Feds are going to be doing a lot of things that local gov should be doing, and I suspect that the special interest lobby groups sucking at the teat include these groups -- all funneled through the individual Congress members getting "their fair share" for their states. |

I can't wait until the details of this bill hit the public. It was crafted with no GOP input, so why should any Republican vote for it? I wouldn't. I'm not pleased wityh the three senators that did, but they aren'ty my representatives. |

Well, it's all kinds of stuff. I'm sure "the Feds are going to be doing a lot of things that local gov should be doing" in a lot of areas, but in others, the Feds are cracking down on local governments for their poor infrastructure without giving them the financial support they need to improve. The stimulus bill could really help towns, for example, who have been ordered by the federal government to shell out billions for new sewer systems. A lot of special interests are trying to get theirs of course, but at the same time there are competitive bids for a lot of the grants being proposed. Some of these grants are controlled by Congress, while others are organized through separate agencies or even local governments, once the money is forked over by Congress. My opinion on the bill so far is that it's just one big futhermucking mess. Any and all manner of money exchange is going on here and it's anybody's guess as to what the outcome's going to be. EDIT As for Congressmen raking in money for their states, a lot of the funding from this bill was determined by economic formulas derived from OMB to assess the areas with the greatest need. Other ones seem to have been basically shelled out, just 'cause. |

Did you guys read the part about Specter saying that a sizable number of his R colleagues thought the bill was good, but wouldn't vote for it anyway. Politics as usual is right. |

Sizeable is a fairly inexact term, especially coming from a guy who will take a lot of heat for his decision who wishes to frame it as a decision of conscience. Now if a 'sizeable' number of senators who did NOT vote for it start publicly commenting that they thought iot was a good bill and they wish they did or politically could have votes for it, that might be significant. |

So, what's your beef with Specter, other than that he supports the bill and says a sizable number of his spineless colleagues do too? |

None, other than he voted for this bill. But that does not give him instant credibility for anything he says, especially when one can see that he would like it to be that way. |
