Kenny, When I posted that, I knew someone would make that comment. And you know what, you're not wrong. Is it any worse to eat dog than cow, just because we make dogs our pets? I wouldn't eat Sidney, my macaw, but I had chicken the other night. So (and I did post that to be a bit provocative), what's the difference between Fido and Filet? Mrs George was active in the "No Horse Slaughter" movement about 10 years ago. How is Trigger different from Bossie? If they're slaughtered humanely, what's the diff? In Germany you can get Pferdefleisch. Not in Chicago. |

Sure there's a difference. That's why there's a such thing as the food chain. Rarely is nature deliberately cruel, though. The actions of these fishermen are deliberately cruel, and the BS about somehow tying it to global warming and overcrowded shelters is just nonsense. That's the difference. If their conscience didn't protest, they would have no need to rationalize what they're doing. |

You guys know I'm a fisherman. I've never heard of this before and find it disgusting and revolting. I'm distressed to hear that people in the US might be doing this. Should I ever witness or hear of this occurring, I would call the local authorities in a New York minute. As Jolly has said many times, "some people just need killin..." and these bastards most definately fall in this category. |

Identifying narcissists isn't difficult. Just look for the person who is constantly fishing for compliments and admiration while breaking down over even the slightest bit of criticism. We have the freedom to choose our actions, but we do not get to choose our consequences. | |

I too could not watch the video. Frank is right on with his comment on food chain and diliberate cruelty. In the same vein, there seems to be a very stick strain of machismo that targets cruelty to cats; e.g. the type that will go of his way to hit at cat while driving or sic an aggresive dog on a cat. What is with that? I've just never understood that and I have to think that this sick video is a variation on that theme. Sickening. |

Not much, depending on where you travel on the planet, George. In THIS country though, cooking up the family pet is likely to get the authorities called. |

For now, I'm thinking (hoping!) this vid is a hoax. Snopes had a related story a little while back: http://www.snopes.com/critters/crusader/sharkbait.asp The meows seem fake, and so do some of the images. The 'global warming' and "Rich, white, etc" comments, make me think there is some agenda to this site that has little to do with protecting cats from fishermen. |

Yeah... That's my vein of thought too, after watching the video. When the hook is inserted, the kittens don't even flinch. Plus, the kittens in the bucket with the closed lid... Something's not quite right about this whole setup. It feels manipulative and deliberate. |

I too thought the feel of this vid seemed off. very staged. And the spokesman seems unlikely, with very odd choices of shot locales. (against the side of a building with his sunglasses on?) But aside from all that, the question: whats the difference between a kitten and a worm? This strikes me as very akin to the issues raised in the abortion threads: whats the difference between an embryo and a baby. What threshold is defined that separates whats ok to kill from whats not ok to kill? Its a tough question. Everyone feels a sense of where the line is, but wheverever that is, someone else can construct an argument that invalidates that line, logically and rhetorically. Who knows, maybe we do have an innate perception of where the line is, but dont have the intellectual, ethical, or linguistic tools to articulate, quantify, or define it. Or maybe not. Its a tough question. I do feel a kitten is more important than a worm. Some people feel the line is defined by what has a soul. Some people feel kittens have souls, some people dont. Some people feel humans dont have souls. Moonbat expressed his line is drawn at the distinction of a mind. Many people feel kittens have minds. Many people feel they've lived previous lives as animals. Maybe the innate understanding without enough intellect would manifest itself as a mythology of 'soul' or 'mind'. Maybe not. Does anyone think a worm has a mind or a soul? I imagine some do. I'm sure many dont. its a tough question. |

I also think the video is a fake. No identifications are made of either boats or people and the whole video has a fake feel to it. Also, blaming the "situation" on global warming is goofy. OTOH, the contact person listed, Grady Warren seems to be a real person.

Humans have a lot more in common with a kitten. For a start, kittens can be depressed or happy - they play and dream. A kitten is essentially a sentient creature. I don't eat meat. Is that good enough to have an opinion on unnecessary cruelty and suffering? |

Even though a cat would eat you alive without the slightest hesitation? Animals eat other animals. It is the way of the world. |

Animals eat other animals, of course it's the way of the world, but what they don't do, and what they don't even understand, is what cruelty and suffering is. They don't pontificate on it, they don't philosophise on it. Only humans of all animals, have empathy for the suffering of other sentient creatures. Humans should live up to the enlightened creatures we are rather than living down to the level of animals. Incidentally, it's worth mentioning that Macaque monkeys have been shown to exhibit empathy for the suffering of their fellow creatures. |
