HOLY CARP!!!
|
I recently uncovered a stamp collection of my grandfather. Essentially it's a black leather book published by Scott Stamp & Coin Company, 33 West 44th Street, New York City, in 1925. The book has a page or two for each of the countries that existed then, and squares for their stamps. The book is only about 10 percent full (mostly empty squares) but the stamps that are there are fascinating. They are as old as the 1870s and as new as the 1920s. For example, I have stamps from 1922 Germany and from 1882 New Zealand. I have 1911 stamps from Romania and 1884 from Russia. What should I do with them, other than admire them. ??? |

I'd suspect they are worth something, if in good shape, which I'd imagine they are. From a quick google... 'Scott Publishing prints an annual stamp catalog that contains photos and current retail values for every stamp ever issued worldwide. You can find a recent edition at your local library. Ask for it at the reference desk.' On Epirus, http://www.unrv.com/provinces/epirus.php |

Ha! You know, my grandfather, God rest his soul, thought everything he owned was secretly worth a lot. I've been on some goose chases before researching the value of the stuff he game me (like the first ever newspaper worth at least $100,000) and let's just say that I spent more on gas going to the local library than the relic turned out to be worth. But, of course, they're all interesting and I proudly display them all. [checking frantically to see if I have that stamp that OT posted] |

Have fun with your search, R2. I watch Antiques Roadshows sometimes, and wish some relative would leave me some horrendously ugly old thing that is actually worth thousands of dollars, so I wouldn't have any sentimental remorse about ditching it and getting the cash. |

My favorite antiques roadshow segment was when someone brought in an old chinese vase. The appraiser spent five minutes pointing out bit after bit of it that indicated taht it was from a certain dynasty and made by a certain artist and that it was worth a fortune. He wrapped up the segment by pointing out a mark that indicated that it was a worthless forgery.

They are all starting to look alike. Wish I trusted someone who was educated in this area. I have one from Natal, 1902. Some from Mozambique, 1913 and the Mozambique Company (???) from 1918. |

Rosemary dos, don't be silly. They are worth something. You need a good appraiser. The ad above is such. The name is Gary Posner 1 800 323 4279 or www.GemStamps.com I heard of them. Seem reliable. |

Found some from Romania, around 1908. Similar to: ![]() This one is neat, from Russia, 1875. It is selling cheaply on eBay, which surprises me: And these, from Saargebiet. Not sure of the year, but they are postmarked 1918:

I have a few of these. If I had the whole set in perfect condition, they'd be worth around $700. This is interesting and addicting. ![]() Here's one from 1889 from Tasmania. If I had the collection of of 8 and they were in mint condition, they'd be worth something.
