Edit: Not bad but there might have been an Clintonesque whoopsy-daisy in the targetting....

The first drone attack struck a house owned by a man called Khalil Khan in the village of Zeerakai at 1700 local time.

Four Arab militants were killed in the strikes, officials said. Their identities were not immediately clear but officials said one was a senior al-Qaeda operative.

The second attack was aimed at the house of a Taleban commander about 10km (six miles) from the town of Wanna, local reports said.

But officials told the BBC that the drone actually hit the house of a pro-government tribal leader, killing him and four members of his family.

I have a question. How do they know that four anything was killed in the strikes? Does a light light up and say "militant" like in a video game?

True, you'd think the only confirmation coming out of a Pakistani tribal area would be propaganda.

Don't be ridiculous. They make a high-pitched sqeak when they pop their clogs which can be picked up by the high-tech sensory gizmo-wos'names that are placed in strategerically important positions throughout the country.

Perhaps from the same intelligence sources that provided them the location in the first place.

Process sometimes goes something like this:

Local sources provide US intelligence with some locations.

Small group of Rangers, or other elite military group monitors and confirms the site(s). They pin-point the precise locations for the drones, along with providing times where the targets are most likely to be there.

KA--BLAMMO!!1 :woot:

Site may continue to be monitored, and/or intelligence sources may confirm targets killed/wounded/missed whatever.

Can't remember what channel I saw that on..but it was an interesting show nonetheless.

How is it when Bush does it it is warmongering and threatening to inflame Pakistan, yet Obama does it and it becomes 'simple competence'.

Plus, if you want to assign credit for this, I think you can probably assign it to the prior administration. None of the intelligence and preparation to make this possible is in any way related to Obama's leadership. All he did was nod his head. I'm glad he did, but to tout this as some sort of superior achievement is ridiculous.

It's going to be this way for a long time, Mik. It's frustrating, isn't it?

Now I'm not against droning down on these fine fellows, but tell me please how exactly did Obama or his people divine and ascertain their location and put this together in three days.

Now, since that is impossible, I'll settle for you explaining just how this amounts to 'simple competence' that is in any measurable way different than and/or superior to the Bush administration.

Really, Steve. Take off the blinders.

SIMPLE COMPETENCE has to do with the fact that Barak Obama is doing exactly what he said he would do. He's doing a whole lot of it too - this one strike appears to be merely the tip of the iceberg if you research the story a bit further.

Steve, this is nothing different than Bush did. This is by no means the first drone strike into Pakistan.

Bush kept his campaign promises as well as any president in our history. The fact that he was not successful in all of them means little. Obama won't be either.

It is far to early to judge the man's competence.

Perhaps, but there appears to have been a lot of groundwork laid already, and this by a guy who hasn't even president for a week. Keep this up and we just might be able to get the hell out of there:

So, with a volatile Pakistan having co-operated with us for 7 years, and the left screaming about the US imposing its will on other nations, you think it is a good idea for us to go in there and tell them what's what, and what they have to do? Do you not think the Bush admin would have exerted more leverage if they could have?

I hope it works out, but I have my concerns that it could make things a whole lot worse than they are today. Pakistan's government has its limitations. They have never been in control of the tribal areas, and insisting they try to be for our sake will not make it so.

I think you are assigning a whole lot more planning to this than there really is.

Dude... Just how long do you think it takes to gather the intelligence for operations like this? I would submit that it takes far longer than a single week. Cheering for the result and supporting the President is a good thing, but c'mon: Let's maintain some modicum of perspective. :lol2:
