I suppose there's some logic to it ... Patterson wanted a woman, she helps him upstate.

However, she comes from a Republican district, and it won't be that easy for another Democrat to hold her seat.

An odd choice.

Also, it sucks I had to read to paragraph 10 before finding out where she is from.
In my defense, I was left unsupervised.

from the article

One of Mr. Paterson’s preferences had been to select a woman to replace Mrs. Clinton.
That's sexual discrimination right there.

.She comes from a republican family,is rated 100% by the NRA, is an avid hunter, has a couple young children, and has been in office under two years. Sounds familiar, huh?

As I've said before, Vince, I have no quarrel with whether Palin is qualified to be a Senator.

President ... that's another story.

For what it's worth, I'd say the exact same thing about Gillibrand. Or, if you'd like a far more liberal name, my local Congressperson, Niki Tsongas.

But Ms Palin was really, really not running for president. However, you seemed to mis read me I think Ms Gillibrand is a fine choice. I was simply pointing out a few similarities.

Because of actuarial odds, there was more than a de minimis likelihood that she'd wind up as President.

I have no quarrel with Sarah Palin fulfilling some "do nothing and look pretty at state funerals" role. Those are things she might have been able to handle, and if she screwed it up, there would not have been too much at risk. She was not, and is not, qualified to be President.

I think it's a moot point. The Senior Senator from Ariz. will be alive in four years, and I will be able to say to you at that time, SEE he made it and she's four years smarter!

Eight years, Vince. Eight years.

And the actuarial chances of him surviving for eight years was 1 in 6.

But hey, I voted for the guy. I thought a 5 in 6 chance was worth the risk.

Yeah, you and all my friends thought so.

The world is full of calculated risks. As you well know, the hardest risks to value are the ones that involve a small likelihood of a catastrophic event.

The pick of Gillibrand is very interesting, and so far she sounds pretty good to me. She supports gay marriage which is always nice. A cursory look at her voting record looks pretty level headed which is always nice.

I really doubt he would have run for a second term. He may have dangled that while interviewing VP candidates.

 If "the actuarial chances of him surviving for eight years was 1 in 6" then how did you get to 5 in 6? I think you are confusing your terms.

You are correct, that should have read, the actuarial chance of him DYING within eight years was 1 in 6.
