Well deserved! I thought this film was terrific and easily the best of the year (not including my love affair with The Dark Knight). List: http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090122/ap_en_mo/oscar_nominations_list |

There are a few movies that I really want to see. This is one of them. Brideshead Revisted Hotel For Dogs (My daughter will love this one, I'm sure) Revolutionary Road |

I really enjoyed it, although that may be because it was the first non-kid movie I have seen in a theater in more than a decade. jf, counting Harry Potter and LOTR as kid movies |

MS and I were very skeptical going in to Brideshead, since we are both fans of Evelyn Waugh (I think BHR is one of the greatest novels of the 20th century) and we both love the original ITV version with Jeremy Irons, Anthony Andrews, John Gielgud and Lawrence Olivier. We were more than pleased with the condensation of the story to movie length. Beautiful shot and acted, and they again used Castle Howard, which really steals the show.

Very cool... I'm hoping that this year brings out more good work from the Indian dudes that brought us "The Ring" and "The Grudge," too.

I dont think Gran Torino was eligible...need to confirm that though. I also thought it was mediocre, but that's another story. |

I've seen both the top 2 candidates for best film. Slumdog and Benjamin. I give Slumdog the nod over Benjamin. Both were good movies, neither were great. Slumdog is one of those movies that'll stick in my mind longer though. The stark picture of India's slums was graphic. With Benjamin, I kept looking at my watch as it got closer to the end, wondering when would it. BB is no FG!! |

ZOOOOOM!

Actually, I wouldn't want Benjamin Button to win anything huge. It was a real good movie but it was too formulaic for me. I mean, he was just such a consistently nice guy. Nobody is that flawless. So much so that after awhile he didn't seem to be very much like a real person. Not only that, but they really didn't do much with his disorder. His love affair, the thing with his father and his interesting life experiences all could have been done without the reverse aging thing. The movie got real interesting near the end but that's not much for a 3 hour movie. It was certainly "good" but c'mon, best picture? Pfffft. |
| I cite irreconcilable differences. | |

<sigh> I looked through all the nominations in every category. I have not seen a single one of those movies. I think I now have to recuse myself from any intelligent conversation on any subject. |

(But I agree with your point that the supporting acting and some of the dialog was pretty poor -- esp the barber shop and construction trailer scenes) |

HOLY CARP!!!

I think BB is a brilliant film. I do think it's more art than action, and am happy that the screenplay followed the general idea of Fitzgerald's story but changed it significantly. The characters in the story are not very fleshed out. When reading it, I find myself glad that Fitzgerald left so much to the imagination. So...I think that the artistry works in both cases. If you get a chance to see Defiance, I liked it a lot. Great score also |

How could the nominations come out this morning and there is a commercial tonight at ten bragging about the 13 nominations? Sounds like some one knew the results. |
