Does anyone here use Net Nanny, or any similar sort of software, to ensure that their kids don't go places on the internet that they aren't supposed to go?

Any opinions about one version of the software versus another?

All I can tell you is that I used to love getting around those. :P
I cite irreconcilable differences.

Best solution, IMO, is having the computer on the dining room table, right in the middle of the most high-traffic spot in the house.

Timely topic considering the Supreme Court's latest dismissal of Mukasey v. ACLU. The Child Online Protection Act is no-go.

How does Net Nanny do anything beyond what can be done by setting limits on Google?

Just curious.

We used Cyber Sitter for many years and it seemed to work fine.

The boys did not even know it was there when they were young. I remember eldest FrostK looking up something about Bill Clinton's impeachment and wondering why there seemed to be all these missing words.

Puffin has always known it was there and seemed grateful for it, but she now has a laptop that is unprotected. We are in "trust" mode right now. Hope that will work.

Also, what Frank said.

Yeah, we took the Frank approach. The computer was in a high traffic area. DD's first computer that was NOT in a high traffic area was for games only and didn't have an internet connection.

With DD now 14, we are also in trust mode.

We had computers facing the public areas.

But, for Christmas, the girls got laptops. (They didn't have computers at their mother's house.) So now they are mobile and hostile (well, not all that hostile, but you can't really predict which way the screen will be facing any more).

So I need a Ronald Reagan solution ... trust, but verify.

That's a tough one, Quirt. I don't envy you. My daughter is 11. So far, the only thing I've caught her doing, is reading books under the covers with a flashlight. (And I just say, "You know you're supposed to be sleeping, right?") I just don't have it in me to be upset by that. I did the same thing as a kid. LOL
