Hair help; I'm due for a new do

OK, this is about as brave or crazy as a person can be here at TNCR.

I have hip-length hair at this time and I'm ready for a cut, a big cut.
Those of you with some sense of style, please give me some pics of hairstyles I should consider.

My hair is 'good' hair in the sense that it has natural waves and curls, especially when it's shorter. It's really easy hair. I wash, condition, and comb it. That's it. And I would prefer a style that's easy to maintain, too.

Oh, and the moon would be nice, too. Just kidding.

Got any ideas? Seen any cuts that might work for me? Hope so. This is not an area of expertise for me. The stylist will ask what I want, and I need to have an idea ready. With hip-length hair, you can imagine how often I go to a hair salon. HA! I've had some trims over the last several years, but that doesn't count as a change of style. This is new turf. Yes, I know they have those books of styles, but I usually don't see any that suit me. I also think I am so used to the long hair that I am having trouble conceptualizing other possibilities.

Help!

I never get involved in conversations about a woman and her hair, even when asked. Hip length hair, though, is really cool!!!!

Are you thinking short as in shoulder length or short as in a really short crop?

The first I went short (boy-short) my hair was mid-way down my back. I loved the change. My hair sounds like it's similar to yours - wavy but not curly - and when it was long, it was easy to deal with. When it's really short (like now) I just towel dry and then put in some styling clay and muss it up with my fingers. Super easy. I've grown it out a few times, and I found mid-length to be the hardest to style. As soon as it gets down below my ears, suddenly I pretty much have to blow-dry, and it takes a lot more fussing with. I can't be bothered! When it's a bit longer (shoulder length), then I find it gets easier again.

Since you're making such a drastic change and you're not sure what you want, I would suggest shelling out the money for a really good stylist, telling him or her how short you want to go, and ask their opinion. Once it's cut once by the pricey stylist, you can go to your regular person again for maintenance since you'll have a better idea.

I'm a kibitzer by nature, but I'm not going there. Whatever you pick will be stunningly beautiful, as are you.

Go ahead and kibitz, Mik.

What's your thought on it? You're holding back, and I made sure to include you by mentioning RED in my post.

Dol, I'll probably go just a bit longer than shoulder length. That will still be about 15 to 18 inches for the cut.

Right now it is so long I have to wear it braided much of the time, even to sleep. Otherwise hubby rolls on it in his sleep, and yowsers that can hurt!

HAH! Now I get a banner ad for "Mixed Chicks leave-in conditioner" for frizzy hair. Glad I don't need it.

OK, Swammie says .......................... Mik is thinking I should dye it RED.

Oh, what a surprise. :lol2:

IT, thanks for thinking hip-length hair is cool. I have some guy friends here in MN who don't think I should cut it at all. And it's not hubby sayin' it. They're not creepy about it. They just say, "Oh, Brenda, ....... don't cut your hair." And then they leave it at that.

But the white hair is a comin' and me thinks I need a plan.

I agree with Dol. I trust the professionals.

Either way be brave. Big changes in hair can be scary. When it's first cut you'll likely feel panic and think, "I don't like it." You may feel a bit sick to your stomach. At least that's my experience. But trust the pros, and you'll be getting compliments left and right.

R2 and Dol,
You're right. I'll need to see who's really good around here, maybe ask around in a larger city we are near.

Maybe they'll have different style books, too! :lol2: (I'm baffled by the style books, so this joke is just for me. :lol2: )

to start.. i'd suggest a gently layered cut that falls a couple inches below your shoulders when wet (above your shoulders when dry) to see how curly it actually is without the weight of your hair.

Yes, that's why I have waited this long to cut it.

Am I that predictable already? :lol2:

apple, it's rather curly. To get it to be shoulder length when dry means I'll cut it about three inches past shoulder length when wet. You're thinking just like I'm thinking for length. And you're right about the change in length from wet to dry; it's amazing how it pops up. I've learned over the years to tell the stylist to cut it below shoulder length to end up with it actually at shoulder length.

That's exactly what I was going to suggest. A few gentle layers and around shoulder length when dry. Then you can see how your hair reacts, just how wavy/curly it goes when shorter. You may find the layers really liven up the wave, and they'll add some softness around your face.

Live with that, before deciding for anything shorter, I'd say.

My hair is turning that funny colour too, and I've found the texture is really changing. Used to be dead straight, and now I have waves. You may find when cutting yours, that you've got way more curl than you thought, so I really wouldn't go too short too start.

I have always had quite a bit of curl, but you may be right about there being even more now. The white has great body to it. It's not thin or wispy.

I'm interested in softening the look. I'm tired of having it back all the time, and that's why I'm looking forward to the cut.

I'd like to start with it below the shoulder, which will still leave plenty to donate from the cut. If I want it a little longer, it grows really fast, too.

I suppose to manufacturers of hair pieces that are dyed or used as is.

There is another organization that accepts gray and white hair (mine is a mix of white and reddish-brown). It's called Wigs for Kids. I may use them instead, but the concept is similar to Locks of Love. Wigs for Kids does not accept dyed or chemically treated hair, which still works for me. I use nothing on my hair except shampoo and conditioner, no dyes, perms, or other chemicals.

Gonna grow out your hair, Riley? :D
