Currently in the midst of an awful cluster headache cycle, so I haven't been real social, lately. I hope everyone is well.

Sorry to hear about your headaches, Frank. I take it Obama's inauguration did not cure them. That is a pity but at least we can get excited about not having to put gas in our cars or pay our mortgages any more. Anyway, hang in there bud. |

Heh... Thanks... This excerpt from my blog early this a.m., after a true "Godsplitter" captures the despair. (Language and blasphemy alert. Sorry...) "O my f'cking god!!!! I just got through with the worst hit... I am so drained, so goddamned tired of this sh't. Year after f'cking year!! This one started at my typical time: 12:32 a.m. It woke me out of a sound sleep and had me stumbling for the kitchen to grab the icepack out of the freezer, and from there, it was down to the basement so that (God forbid) my sobs of agony wouldn't awaken my daughter. And sometimes, standing barefoot on the concrete helps, because when I get hit, my body temperature spikes like mad. This time, ice didn't help. The cold concrete didn't help. Sobbing and grinding the ice into my f'cking eye and asking God for help didn't help. F'cking typical. Hey, God!! Thanks for nothing, you f'cking asshole!!! You unresponsive, cold-hearted f'cker!! The hit finally, after a half hour, slowly subsided. I put the icepack away, and then dragged myself back to bed, and as I lay down, I just started crying... I am so broken... so drained... so tired and exhausted and sick of this. I just want to f'cking die already!" |

I feel for you, Frank. I had a bad headache all day, two days ago. I'm sure it was a 2 or a 3 on your scale, but for me it was absolutely debilitating. Made it hard to do anything at all. |

I never get headaches. I can't imagine going through what Frank is experiencing. It sounds like hell on earth. |

Thanks... Quirt, I have friends who have migraines who shake their heads at me and say, "I'd never want to experience that." But when I look at people who have migraines that lay them out for two and three days at a time, I think I'd rather have the intensity of the cluster headache. At least most of the time, once I'm done with a 30-40 minute hit, I can pick myself up and get on with things, to a certain extent. The hellish thing about CH, is that it's every single day, several times a day/night, for eight weeks straight. (And I'm one of the lucky ones because I'm episodic.) I can't get adequate rest. At this point, I just feel like a hollow shell... |

I wish I could go to bed until it was over... If headaches were music, cluster headaches would be the thrasher punks of the headache world. I'm thinking of getting a gun safe, or else asking a friend to keep my guns until this sh't is over... |

Great to hear from you, Frank, but not great to hear you are in the midst of so much pain. Yes, Frank, have a friend keep the guns away for a few weeks until this passes. Even someone who is rational the rest of the year would be driven bonkers by cluster headaches like yours. It's not worth the risk to have them in the house. Your family needs you. And this place is ever so much more fun with you around.

Thanks, Mik. It's been a very odd cycle. Rather than being hit four and five times a day/night, I'm getting hit once or twice in every 36-hour period. Otherwise, I'll get mild "shadows" or else I won't get hit at all. The odd thing is that this cycle had no definitive beginning, and so far, there's no end in sight. I don't know what to expect from it. In some ways, that's worst of all.... |

So sorry to hear about your headaches! What I have found to take the edge off of headaches is Coca Cola. Not Pepsi, but the real thing, Coca Cola. I always have some on hand. It is medicinal for me. Also, Coca Cola started out as a medicinal product before it became a soda. |

Random FML: Today, I was fired by my boss in front of my coworkers. It would have been nice if I could have left the building before they started celebrating. FML The founding of the bulk of the world's nation states post 1914 is based on self-defined nationalisms. The bulk of those national movements involve territory that was ethnically mixed. The foundation of many of those nation states involved population movements in the aftermath. Thank you... ILM, you wouldn't believe the medications that they prescribe for this condition. Often, caffeine helps with headaches. It's the main ingredient in most headache medications. For cluster headaches, narcotics do nothing. Instead, there are lovely things like Depakote, Topamax, Verapamil, Prednisone tapers, injectable Imitrex, and on and on... It's a case of the "cure" (treatment) being worse than the condition. Too often, especially in cases like Imitrex, rebound headaches are a real problem, where additional and often, very severe, headaches are actually caused by the medication itself. I'm making do with ice, a lot of teeth-gritting, and a lot of swearing. "Interesting... How's that workin' for ya'?" Eh... not so great, to be honest.
