I think you're supposed to drop the screechy rhetoric about the "war on terror" now that Bush is out of office and your own guy President Obama is using that sort of language.

So, if he hadn't said a word about terrorism, and how we are - or should - try to fight it, you would have complained that Obama wasn't going to do anything on that front. Too bad. The poor guy can't win.

Maybe he might not be a bad president. I guess he'll never satisfy the idealogues, though.

The founding of the bulk of the world's nation states post 1914 is based on self-defined nationalisms. The bulk of those national movements involve territory that was ethnically mixed. The foundation of many of those nation states involved population movements in the aftermath. When the only one that is repeatedly held up as unjust and unjustifiable is the Zionist project, the term anti-semitism may very well be appropriate. - P*D

I thought Obama was a leftist? More than a few people here implied the USA was about to descend into a socialist miasma to rival that of 1920's Russia. I was rather looking forward to the purges, truth be told.

That's not the point and you know it. The guy campaigned on 'change' and how badly we were doing, how he was going to do tis and do that and turn it all around. Now what we see is continuation of Bush's foreign policies. We'll see some differences, but they will be window dressing as opposed to substance.

Talking to foreign leaders, and acting like their views matter, is not window dressing, it's substance.

The rest of the world, even our allies in Iraq, thought President Cheney Bush treated them in a dismissive and cavalier fashion. That had, and continues to have, consequences. Reversing that, and repairing our reputation in the world, is not window dressing. It's appalling that you'd think so.

Citation on that Cheney thing? I've not read that.

Respecting our allies' viewpoints is not the same thing as being hamstrung because they don't agree.

It's all about perception. Their perception is that we stiffed them. And they have responded accordingly.

Yep. That's why they are listing to the right. Because they hate Bush so much. Almost as much as you.

If UN resolutions are meaningless we should withdraw and shut down the NY facility, not to mention withdrawing financial support.

Some of the allies felt like being kicked in their balls for not sharing the same viewpoints.
A bit less unilaterality would have been appreciated.

Sure, that's why we spent 14 months farting around with the UN before we finally invaded Iraq. Because we are uniliateral about everything.

When you do diplomacy, you probably have to be diplomatic. "You're with us, or you're against us" didn't win many countries over to us.

Obama believes terrorism is bad, Israel deserves the right to exist, countries like N. Korea and Iran shouldn't have nuclear weapons.

Wow, no change. What a Bush clone. I'm so disapointed it's just business as usual.

What really is the purpose of NATO other than to defend Europe from an enemy that no longer exists at US taxpayer expense. Perhaps it is time the Europeans spent more of their own money on their own defense. Our NATO "allies" sure haven't been a whole lot of help in Afghanistan with a few notable exceptions.

Perhaps, being that the august Bush Administration received credible intelligence led itself to believe that by adding Georgia and Ukraine to NATO not only would the alliance itself be strengthened but European security would be enhanced.

Next time, could you perhaps be a little quicker? The British joined your silly Iraqi adventure immediately - WW1 didn't start for you chaps until 1917, and it took a 'He sunk my Battleship' moment before you joined in the fun the second time around, long after the brave boys of the RAF had deflected Adolf from trying to invade civilization and pointed him to points East.

Not that we're ungrateful or anything.

Posted in another thread, but this is an interesting quote from Peggy Noonan:

Obama named in stark terms America's essential foe: "For those who seek to advance their aims by inducing terror . . . we say to you now that our spirit is stronger and cannot be broken; you cannot outlast us, and we will defeat you." This had the authentic sound of a man who's been getting daily raw intelligence briefings and is not amused.
