New president; racist remarks

HOLY CARP!!!
Mark heard two very nasty racist remarks in the past two days. One on Sunday while at Applebee's a guy said "he was going to unplug his TV so that he wouldn't accidentally see that monkey being sworn in as President."

And yesterday during a sports talk show on WDAE's the Ron and Ian show, someone called in and called Obama a Sambo. His was quickly cut off.

Mark was quite shaken over both. He thinks Obama has more to fear from white racists and bigots than he does Al Qaeda.

It's sickening.

I'm very moved and excited about was happening. I didn't vote for Obama, but I'm so thrilled our country has come this far in race issues. It just seems, we have a long way to go yet.

The racist remarks have been disappointing. I almost wish Mark wouldn't have shared them with me. I've been rather isolated and not interested in the outside world.

It has nothing at all to do with race for me.

I am an issues person.

Obama represents everything I hate about government.

I will not watch this blatant display of excess. It is unbelievable that someone who is supposed to be "for the little guy: (yeah right) would permit such a waste of money and resources on something as this.

I wouldn't watch it if McCain had won either.

Would I have watched if Ron Paul would have won? Probably but even then I am not sure.

It would probably not be such a huge expenditure had he won. He simply would not allow tax payer money to be wasted in such a foolish manner.

I'm not watching it but I have it on and I'm listening to it. I'm snatching glimpses here and there.

Personally, I'm revved up about it.

In any case, it was pretty cool seeing Biden and Cheney getting in a car and having to drive to the Capitol together! LOL! One look liked Burr and the other Hamilton. You could feel the hate.

Now Obama and Bush looked not buddy buddy but you could see the glee in Bush's face "yep! I'm outta here!!!!!" as if he were going to a big going away party. Obama looked almost sour as he tried to look dignified. The smile seemed forced. IMO.

I did vote for Obama. And I canvassed, and donated, and made phone calls. I'm also thrilled that our country has come as far as it has w.r.t. race issues.

And I agree with Mark. I think as an individual Obama has more to fear from the lunatic fringe of Americans than he does from any foreign group or country.

I know many on this board do not agree with Obama's planned policies, and I'm ok with that. You're each entitled to your opinions, just as I'm entitled to mine. I worked harder than I ever have before to get a person elected President that I thought would more closely reflect where I want to see this country go. The part I played was small, and probably in the grand scheme of things inconsequential. Nevertheless I campaigned FOR Obama and his policies and I campaigned AGAINST McCain and the Republican policies.

Was I right? Beats me. But I was willing to give him a chance and I'm glad he's getting that chance.

If I was wrong, then I'll campaign against him next time and try to get him voted out of office.

I truly hope that all who do NOT support President Obama will take the same course of action, work within the political system to find a candidate who can represent their views, and then work to get their candidate elected.

In the context of the American political process, violence is simply not an answer to any problem, real or imagined, that may arise.

So lets see how this goes. If the guys a flake, trust me enough of the liberals will figure that out and help to vote him out of office. If he's the real deal though, I hope that my conservative friends and acquaintances are willing to own up to it and, to use an old but not tired phrase to join in and either "lead, follow, or get the hell out of the way".

Regards to all,
Dan

I agree.

I am worried a bit about some "backlash" as well. When minorities, during or after the Obama administration, complain about how far we still have to go, I think they are wrongly going to be chided. As if simply electing a black man redresses all the wrongs from before.

That said, I hope Obama will help put an end to the victimhood of minorities. There could not be a better person to end Affirmative Action and declare that we are finally all considered equal in the eyes of God and Government.

Racism is ugly. But racism comes from all directions, not just one.

Yes, Bush was called a chimp, pictures were photoshopped to make him look like a chimp, etc. Black people make their racist remarks as well.

The sad thing is that now, anyone who says anything negative about Obama is likely to be accused of being a racist. Many of the comments made about Bush if made putting Obama in Bush's place would be considered racist.

I actually believe that over the next 4 years we are going to have the race issue tossed out so much that prejudice against blacks is going to increase because of it. I'm already tired of hearing about it.

As in the just completed prayer at the end of the inauguration... 'when brown can stick around, when yellow can mellow, when the red man can get ahead, man, when white can embrace what's right'

Excuse me? When white can embrace what's right? If that's not a racist characterization, I don't know what is.

Larry's right about racism. And he's also right that there is a double standard. Many of the comments about President Bush were tasteless, but nobody called them racist. And those identical comments about President Obama would no doubt create a firestorm of outrage from the left about racism.

I don't know how to change that for others. For myself I simply try to find the humor or to at least assume that any racial overtones were inadvertent or unintended. I'm not always successful with that, but I try. Changing that as a country will IMO require individuals to make that change, either for themselves or for their children. If this could take place, then eventually with the passage of time our nation could find a way to stop dealing the race card with such regularity.

You bet. The Reverend Wright speaks by proxy at the inauguration. The utter wrongness of that statement on the day a black man becomes president is stunning.

Yes, I picked up on the aspersion cast on whites as well during the ending prayer.

Maybe he was trying to be funny. The remarks right before that one were both humorous and serious. (the 'browns can stick around' etc.) Or maybe he truly believes whites don't know right from wrong. I don't know, but this is a perfect example of what I was talking about. If that had been a white preacher, and the remark had been about blacks being stupid, the firestorm would have already started.

Wow. The whole phrase strikes me as bizarre, and totally inappropriate. 'When yellow can mellow'? WTF? Perhaps, being out of context, I'm just not getting it.

This was a prayer?

Actually, it makes me think of a phrase we were told in Mexico about when you should flush the toilet and when you should hold off, but I won't repeat it here in a thread about such a classy occasion. :silly:

Look at some of the double standards from the last few days:

For weeks now we've listened as many have literally trashed Rick Warren, with constant complaining that he was invited to say a prayer because "he might mention Jesus Christ". If that wasn't offensive enough to the nearly 90% of us who don't have a problem with it, it is further compounded by the fact that when this Obamagasm started 3 days ago, the very first prayer offered was by a black minister, who ended his prayer "in the name of your son".

I suppose this means that if a white preacher mentions Jesus Christ it's a bad thing, but it's ok if a black man does it.

For 8 years blacks AND whites have referred to Bush as a stupid chimp. Someone please tell me the difference between calling Bush a chimp and calling Obama a monkey.

In a prayer offered today by a black minister it was said "when red can get ahead, when yellow can mellow, and when white can get it right".

Excuse me? What would have happened if a white guy had said that? What if a white guy said it, and added "when black can get off crack" or "when black can get off its back".

I have heard more racism and more talk about race since Obama came on the scene than I've heard in years.

It helps if you know the difference between racism and bigotry, by the way.. they *are* different.

Rhyming is over-rated. There should be no rhyming allowed in an event of this magnitude.

I missed that phrase. That must have been when I got up to get a snack.
