Recently I have been wanting to get into more Hi-fi music listening. I bought a Beyerdynamic DT 770 headphone, it's really great sound - I use i with my iPod and computer. I was thinking of getting a headphone amp, anyone have a particular one to recommend if you understand about them? I want to pick up a Sennheiser hd 650 too, so that will definitely need an amp. |

Err... what does MP3 have to do with the amount of money you spend on your equipment? At sufficiently high bitrates, MP3 is indistinguishable from uncompressed audio formats, hence if you have a good digital-to-analog converter (read: decent soundcard), then you'll have excellent quality. Most of my MP3s are sampled at 256kbs or 320kbs, and I doubt that anyone can hear the difference to the original. |

Interestingly enough, many audiophiles don't poo-pooh the use of vinyl records, whose bandwidth is considerably less than desirable, and which are inherently noisy when compared to a CD, but sound 'better' in some way. |

I don't use the MP3 format, I try to use the highest quality possible format, but obviously it still isn't "Hi-fi" on an iPod. Headphone amp is not so much for volume, but I was hoping they'd let the headphones perform even better in terms of sound quality. I need to learn more about this. |

Crash, check out http://www.goodcans.com/. They're rather noncommittal on the benefits of headphone amps. There's also the law of diminishing returns when it comes to anything hi-fi. Also: http://www.headphone.com/products/headphone-amps/ |

I personally hate earbuds. The sound is not so good and they won't stay put in my right ear. I'm looking for a better headphone option myself. |

If you can get past their somewhat dated look, Grado SR60 and SR80's are reputedly the best value for money headphones you can buy. I had a pair of SR60's that I used with an mp3 player and they sounded very nice, considering they cost only $60. |

That is the direction I think I'll go, John. Don't care a whit for how it looks, just how it works. Thanks for the links! |

Man, I hate those things. I'm sure for a lot of people they fit fine, but they never stay in my ears. Not to mention, it's incredibly uncomfortable to jam them into your ears. The ones I've tried have such a horrible, buzzing mono sound quality. |

When it's cold enough outside that I have to wear a stocking cap, I wear earbuds. The cap keeps them in, and I use the smallest size or my ears start hurting. When it's warm and I don't have to wear a cap, I wear these things, which work well:
