I've had tendonitis - I swapped mouse hands (not too hard as I'm left-handed and had been using it right-handed) and pretty much gave up the piano I wasn't much cop to start with, so it wasn't as great loss as it might be to you. I'm now a terrible guitarist instead of a terrible pianist but my hands don't hurt.My doctor recommended using an icepack on the swelling in the evenings. She threatened me with cortisone injections, but I ran away. |

Identifying narcissists isn't difficult. Just look for the person who is constantly fishing for compliments and admiration while breaking down over even the slightest bit of criticism. We have the freedom to choose our actions, but we do not get to choose our consequences.

It was only my right hand, and I use it for the mouse about 50% of the time without any problem - there hasn't been any recurrence but it took about 6 months to go away. I think it was a lot of computer use coupled with moderate piano practice, undoubtedly with bad technique. |

Ok, cheers for the info. I'm also being threatened with cortisone injections but i'm tempted to take them up on it. |

I spent 30 years programming - I guess we only had mice for about the last 18. Anyway I've had plenty of RSI. Advil can help. I've had pretty good results with barbells. And these can be effective even with very low weight - even 3 pounds or maybe less, some people say to use soup cans. Use them slowly to loosen and stretch the muscles. Start slowly with light weights maybe 10-20 minutes a few days per week. After a while you'll increase the strength and get better support from the muscles. |

The Confederate soldier was peculiar in that he was ever ready to fight, but never ready to submit to the routine duty and discipline of the camp or the march. The soldiers were determined to be soldiers after their own notions, and do their duty, for the love of it, as they thought best. Carlton McCarthy

make sure your setting is as ergonomic as possible...get your seat height right, make sure you don't have to bend the wrist up and hold it that way...that's a big bad ouch. The little braces they make can help you heal up if you take NSAIDS and wear them religiously for at least a couple of weeks. Rest, rest, rest...i have had good luck with ice massage as well. If you fill small paper cups (they're usually the Dixie brand over here, about 5-7 oz size and freeze them, you can tear off the top part of the cup and use the bottom that remains wrapped around the ice as a handle to rub the inflamed bits with ice. If you try a bunch of stuff and it doesn't work, see if you can find a PT that does ultrasound or cold lazer treatments before you do injections. Good luck...take care of it...easy does it. |

I'm a programmer who plays piano, but I don't type much and I don't practice much. That means that most of my programming is done in my head and transcribed when it's ready. It also means that I'm too lazy to practice piano as much as I should. My posture at the keyboard (computer keyboard) is completely ridiculous, fully reclined till I'm almost horizontal. That may help. No RSI so far! |

Thanks Deb. That's the great thing about recordings... you can practice a few pieces obsessively for like a year, record on a beautiful piano, and voila! The key is to never let anybody ever hear you play anything again...

That's pretty much the response I got ![]() I was playing piano and clarinet, as well as doing a lot of stuff on the computer. The clarinet was the worst, so I wore wrist brace things during rehearsals and practice. Basically, my doc said that if I was going to keep on playing that it was going to get worse. I went to university the next September, and didn't play much piano or clarinet, so it more or less cleared up. I still get tingling in my mouse hand if I'm not careful, so I'm sure it would flare if I went back to piano or clarinet again. |
