Sony Vaio Lifestyle PC

Smaller than a netbook and larger than a smart phone, this sleek device combines the best features of both. For one, it weighs 1.4 pounds and is small enough to fit in your coat pocket.

"It has a cool factor," Sony product manager Xavier Lauwaert said. "You go to a Starbucks and pop this out of your jacket, and people will go, 'Ooh!' " Check out more cool gadgets from CES 2009 »

This Vaio has built-in Bluetooth and GPS technology and runs on Verizon's 3G network, so it's connected to the Web anywhere you can get a cell-phone signal. It also features an 8-inch screen, webcam, two USB ports and a promised four hours of battery life.

The device is available in five colors and hits stores next month. A 60 GB model will sell for $900, a 128 GB model for $1,500.

Yeah, and then put it exclusively on the AT&T network.

NO SALE.

Xavier Lauwaert is a ****ing tool.

Anyway, about the gadget, yeah it's plenty cool looking but the fact that Sony made it makes me weary. This is the company's M.O.: not necessarily make something of high quality, just different enough to have a different edge on the competition.

Here's the relevant specs:
1.33 GHz processor
60GB hard drive
2GB DDR2 SDRAM

The processor sounds fairly decent but I'd wish it had more RAM attached. And only 60GB hard drive?

It does have good wireless capability though it seems (Atheros 802.11 b/g/n, A2DP Bluetooth and Broadband), so yeah, I'd be interested in getting one, too.
I cite irreconcilable differences.

If I want people in a Starbucks to go 'oooh' I've got way cheaper things I can pull out of my pocket.

Well OK, maybe it's closer to Ewwww than Ooooh, but who cares - freakin' latte drinkers.
What do you mean "we", have you got a mouse in your pocket?

I currently have a cool-looking Sony Vaio already. It's a nice machine, but probably I won't buy a Sony again, since the bloatware they put on their laptops is a big pain in the ass.

In terms of specs it's following the netbook trend and it actually has more RAM than is usual for netbooks (though a lower clocked CPU).

The problem with the size will be the keyboard and the battery life - e.g. there's no way you want to do too much typing on a keyboard that small but of course it will all depend on what you're going to use it for.

Yeah, see, I don't like that. But if it had an extra GB I wouldn't complain.

I think it was Sony that would ship a PC w/o bloatware for an extra $100. It was reading about that that convinced me to buy a Mac this time around.
In my defense, I was left unsupervised.
