We are going to have to adjust our expectations when we switch to electric cars. There will be compromises in roominess, range, performance and convenience. There's a reason why the gasoline-fueled internal combustion engine is so predominant. Compared to the alternatives, gasoline (and similar petroleum products like diesel) is safer, cheaper, easier to handle and more energy dense. This is not to say that we shouldn't pursue the development of electric cars for their environmental advantages, as well as the benefit of decreasing US dependence on foreign oil. But it will be a very long time before any electric car is comparable to what we're driving today. |

Civilisation, I vaguely realized then - and subsequent observation has confirmed the view - could not progress that way. It must have a greater guiding principle to survive. To treat it as a carcase off which each man tears as much as he can for himself, is to stand convicted a brute, fit for nothing better than a jungle existence, which is a death-struggle, leading nowhither. I did not believe that was the human destiny, for Man individually was sane and reasonable, only collectively a fool. I hope the gunner of that Hun two-seater shot him clean, bullet to heart, and that his plane, on fire, fell like a meteor through the sky he loved. Since he had to end, I hope he ended so. But, oh, the waste! The loss! - Cecil Lewis

Do you mean the Jimmy Carter who despite his lip service to nuclear energy, and more promoted coal, capitulated to the No Nukes movement after Three Mile Island? |
| The dogma lives loudly within me. | |

Identifying narcissists isn't difficult. Just look for the person who is constantly fishing for compliments and admiration while breaking down over even the slightest bit of criticism. We have the freedom to choose our actions, but we do not get to choose our consequences.

So why haven't people purchased a gas/electric hybrid? It's here today and the performance isn't that bad. I love when somebody pulls up next to me at a stoplight and starts looking the hybrid over. Then, when the light turns green, I gag it and leave 'em in my dust. The biggest reason I've heard as to why folks aren't buying the current hybrid models is the price difference over non-hybrid models. My guess is this will be the same reason why the all-electric car doesn't do well. |

I agree the Chevy Volt in the production pipeline is no looker. I don't blame them for putting more liveable headroom in - there's a reason why chop tops are custom jobs. Very few people want to live with them day after day. I think 1hp is onto something though - a car is still a car and has to incite desire. During the days of $4/gal gas, hybrids were lusted after. Now, not so much. We haven't bought a new car since 2001 but when it is time I'll crunch the numbers and if the payoff for an electric or hybrid is about five years, I'll probably go that route. The electric grid is not far from maxed out, however, so if electric only cars really get ramped up ( someday, my electric battery technology will come) the utilities are going to have to get ahead of that curve - otherwise electricity rates will go up and the cost savings will vanish.
