At the end of the day, we have a very good chance that for the very first time in the history of the income tax, less than 50% of the wage-earners will pay any income tax.

When we reach the point where there are more people riding in the wagon than pushing it, we have ensured our destruction as a nation.

I don't believe that's true. You'd have to have a very strained interpretation of what a "wage-earner" is ... you'd have to include 90 year-old people in nursing homes ... for that to be true. And even then, I'm doubtful.

Do you have any support ... authoritative support ... for that statement?

Do you consider Social Security recipients "wage-earners?" I don't.

That's Rush's line from last week....now, that does not include people who pay other payroll tax besides income tax (SS, whatever).

No, I haven't taken the time to vet the number, but I'm sure if it had not been accurate, every Leftist blog on the interweb would have been screaming...

I don't either.

Which is why I think the idea that 50% of "wage-earners" won't be paying income tax is pure fantasy, made up by some conservative radio host and now repeated by Jolly as gospel he cannot substantiate.

Jolly and I cross-posted ... but, as I thought, it came from "some conservative radio host".

The reason no leftists are screaming about it, I'd guess, is because it's a bad joke and none of them take Rush seriously.

According to the Tax Foundation, the bottom 50% of earners payed a total of 2.99% of income taxes in 2006. An effective tax rate of 3%.

Therefore, without much tinkering at all, the numbers would be correct.

That is quite different than saying that they pay no income tax at all.

Of course they pay a small percentage of the total. They don't earn much. Even 20% of a small number would still be a small number.

This doesn't support anything like the statement you parroted from Rush.

George, is that an effective tax rate of 3%? Or is it 3% of all income taxes paid? The way it's phrased, it sounds like the latter, not the former.

Just looked at the chart. Apparently, if they're right, it's both. 3% of adjusted gross income paid as taxes, and 3% share of total income taxes.

But that's still quite different than saying they'd pay no income tax at all.

Both:

The "Group's Share of Income Taxes" is 2.99%.
The "Average Tax Rate" is 3.01%.

It's interesting to see how they break the data down. It's not exactly unbiased. Here's the categories:

Top 1%

Top 2-5%

Top 5%

Top 6-10%

Top 10%

Top 11-25%

Top 25%

Top 26-50%

Top 50%

Bottom 50%

So, the top 50% is sliced and diced nine different ways, but the bottom 50%? No break-outs at all.

I am so adjective that I verb nouns!
1hp gets it.

When the Dems start talking about wanting money for stronger borders (alientating the hispanic voting base) and more national security (after all the pissing and moaning about Bush's Patriot Act), I suspect that it's all about the money and power and not really about the things the titles of the bill suggest.
The dogma lives loudly within me.
