Jane Monheit has an amazing voice (find her version of "Baby, it's cold outside" with Steve Tyrell), but somehow, this version of "Over The Rainbow" just confuses me. Opinions? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cm7xueB0buk |

Maybe I'd like it better if I listened to it a few times, but I'm not going to give it that chance. Good singer though. |

actually, I am glad to hear you say that, George. I think she's a magnificent talent and a gorgeous babe and I love so much of her work, but this has always struck me as really overwrought, even for a big jazz/orchestra performance. |

now see...that seems very straightforward to me...and totally gorgeous. Not over-anything. Nothing but pure legit sound, sweet emotion with even placement and absolute freedom. That's what the arm business is about...he's just keeping loose in the studio because he can. And it works...what a lovely blend on the ending...he almost sounds like Jiminy Cricket! :-) (I lurrrrrrve Mandy Patinkin) |

I'm a big fan of Jane Monheit, IT. She has a lush and pure voice, but in this version of Rainbow, it seems contrived and overdone. see now...I love the Sentimental Journey. I so much prefer her when she's giving a more disciplined performance. I think she needs the rhythmic energy of a more upbeat number or she is inclined to wallow in her sound. That kind of thing is good for two or three measures once in a while, but she will sort of lounge around for entire songs. I just love the noise she makes when she moves it along and has some sense of pulse in the tone. |

There was a bit about a minute or so into the piece where I felt a valiant effort was in the making--and it was really quite good, but then it became confused. She lost me completely. IMO, this performance (in every sense of the word) is affectatious (by default). I'm not keen on her voice though. It grates, at least in this piece it does. |

I don't understand izzy's version either. It frustrates me. I think there's a quality to his voice that has enormous potential and if he'd just sing the song--without evasion--then his potential could be fulfilled. He doesn't have to do anything but sing "the damned song" and that would be really powerful, interesting and moving. |

Is it OK if I introduce another voice to this discussion? One of my very favorite female vocalists, one who brings tears to my eyes... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tAv1FDpdnmE http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zvq9-sFC6a8 |

If you can get through the introduction to this song, the actual song starts after 3 minutes. This woman is a friend of mine...and I think she has the best, and most versatile pipes to come along in a couple of decades. She is also an amazing songwriter...you should check out her album. This is a live performance (again...after a three minute introduction by the guy that posted it) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YY8tZKL_sJo And Bernard, I'm with you about Nina Simone. I hadn't thought to look on youtube duh! Thanks for posting those! |

Bernard...you'd love this woman. When my daughter was 8, she danced in a three month long production of Funny Girl with Farah Alvin as Fanny Brice. She owned that part in a way that made you forget there ever was a singer called Streisand. And nice as the day is long. She is still in touch with Merry...just a tiny swan from her show so long ago. Her talent is so deep...she is an amazing musician and her lyrics are as good as Joni Mitchell. If you get the CD...let me know what you think. |
