HOLY CARP!!!
|
Our class will be touring Piano row and the Steinway and M+H factories in the next few months. I think we will be in a huge tour bus - small ones can't cross the border, or something. ![]() Gotta sleep somewhere cheap. We plan to pile maximum people into minimum hotel rooms. Anyone know what the maximum # of people allowed is? What if you secretly go over that, will they know/care? I'd love to meet/hang out with anyone here, but it is not certain we will have free time, and if we do others may rather sight-see. Coordinating times and places will be out of my control and I think I must stay with the group but perhaps you could meet us in a restaurant. Or if someone wanted to invite all 14 of us to their house for a piano party there are a couple good pianists in our group (I'm not one of them). I'm not sure our warden will free us up but I'll ask her. |

No such thing. Not that you would want to stay in. I don't know if there are any hostels. |

They tried hostels one year and had a bad experience, and want to keep is more safe. They drew the line at hotels. They say there is a church in Mahnattan with bunk beds in the basement for $50 a head. They tried that one year and may be where we end up. |

If you were going to Stockholm, you could stay here. Last year we told you about Oscar Dios, a Swede with a wacky idea: Park a retired Boeing 747 outside the Stockholm airport, and turn it into motel for the budget-minded traveler. His vision has become a reality, with Dios' 25-room, 85-bed Jumbo Hostel scheduled to open next week. The Jumbo Hostel is now accepting reservations on its website for stays beginning Jan. 15. Dorm rooms start at 350 Swedish kronor ($45), with deluxe private rooms at $1,350 Kroner ($175). For even more, you can spend the night in the plane's cockpit, which has been converted to a sort of honeymoon suite and is the only room on the plane with its own bathroom and shower. |

Hotel business in New York City is off....way off, at least according to the news. The report I saw said rooms were going for less than half their list rates at many hotels. They suggested using the usual services such as Hotwire and others... |

When is the group heading down? Are you spending a night in Boston, and a night in NY? Will the timing coincide with any regional PTG hoo-haws? Are there thoughts on touring any of the fabulously incredible restoration shops along the way from Boston to NY? (there's actually a bunch along the way..) |

A few years ago, someone posted their manhattan time share on a local newsgroup. $400 for 7 nights at Dumont Plaza in Midtown. So I teamed up with a buddy and we shared the suite, $200 each for a week in Manhattan. (yes, two beds). Best deal in the world. The owner of the time share couldnt use her week that year, so sold it off cheap to try to recoup a little $$. I would imagine that situation isnt unique. Maybe look someplace where such deals are likely to post. Craigslist, perhaps. |

How friendly do you want to get? The Hotel Beacon has a great location on the Upper West Side. Most of the rooms have kitchenettes, and many of them can accomodate up to four people (three beds) for around $250 a night, so you're looking at $60 per person. Popular with students. |

Civilisation, I vaguely realized then - and subsequent observation has confirmed the view - could not progress that way. It must have a greater guiding principle to survive. To treat it as a carcase off which each man tears as much as he can for himself, is to stand convicted a brute, fit for nothing better than a jungle existence, which is a death-struggle, leading nowhither. I did not believe that was the human destiny, for Man individually was sane and reasonable, only collectively a fool. I hope the gunner of that Hun two-seater shot him clean, bullet to heart, and that his plane, on fire, fell like a meteor through the sky he loved. Since he had to end, I hope he ended so. But, oh, the waste! The loss! - Cecil Lewis

Kenny, if it were warm weather you could all sleep in tents in the back yard, but seeing how it's winter that may be roughing it a bit. ![]() Hm. Hotels. Hm. Have you thought about YMCAs? (Personally I can't say I'm fond of YMCAs). It might be worth googling hostels too. If you think my being somewhere at the right time might mean a quick hello in person do let me know.... it'd be great to see you again. I'll keep thinking about the hotel question. |

Thanks all. One problem is the range of students. Ages are from 20 to 55 and I know some have higher expectations than others. Any place chosen will not make everyone happy. I like, and would spring for, nicer accommodations, but my bottom threshold is clean and safe. |

Do Hotels.com. You can usually get a cheap rate. I stayed at the Hilton on 6th ave. for about $100/night. YOu don't all have to stay at the same place. |

Random FML: Today, I was fired by my boss in front of my coworkers. It would have been nice if I could have left the building before they started celebrating. FML The founding of the bulk of the world's nation states post 1914 is based on self-defined nationalisms. The bulk of those national movements involve territory that was ethnically mixed. The foundation of many of those nation states involved population movements in the aftermath. When the only one that is repeatedly held up as unjust and unjustifiable is the Zionist project, the term anti-semitism may very well be appropriate. - P*D

It does, however, make it easier to fraternize. I recommended the Affinia to plays. It's nice, roomy, in good neighborhoods, and not ridiculously expensive. However, it may be above a student's budget. |
