For me 2008 could not end fast enough. It was a disaster, for reasons which some of you know, but I do not wish to get into. So I was so looking forward to a fresh start to 2009, but a phone call late Monday evening changed all that. Student killed in highway accident As some of you are aware, my son is a member of a traditional folk music group - The Celtic Fiddlers Robyn was also member of that group, and a dear friend to us all. A gifted precussionist/pianist, it was her voice she was most noted for. For those of you who have the Christmas CD by the group, she sings on several tracks on the album. The group was back in the recording studio this fall, and was preparing a new release for early 2009. Robyn recorded a couple of vocal tracks for this new album, including a cover of "Fields of Gold", a traditional ballad made famous by Sting a few years back. The track will be aired publicly for the first time - at her funeral! She was studying Jazz Vocal at St. FX University in Nova Scotia when the accident happened. Her younger sister is equally gifted, and also a group member. She idolized her older sister, and it was not difficult to tell they were extremely close, as was their entire family. We hosted a get together for the group at our house on Tuesday evening (sans the Peddles) to celebreate Robyn's life, and give the group a chance to meet and grieve - a heartbreaking but much needed retreat. Robyn's life will be celebrated at a church service on Saturday morning. On line tributes can be left at her page on the funeral home's site here and at an open memorial facebook page here I can't tell you enough how my family's already shaky psyche has been rocked by this event. It's terrible. So, I guess 2009 is taking up right where 2008 left off. Jamie |

Jamie, I'm sorry to hear this. The words "my condolences" are frequently all that a person can come up with to offer comfort and support to folks who have suffered a loss like this, and they ring a bit hollow, except what they're really offering is "my heart." My condolences. |

Dear Jamie, When Denise died, Mark said this to Nate and Nate quoted it at the eulogy "If God needed an angel, He picked the perfect person". Please tell the family that applies here as well. I'm so sorry. Peggy |

Thank you everyone for your thoughts and intentions. They were a comfort over the past week, which has been heavy, to say the least. Robyn was commemorated on Saturday in what is likely the most moving tribute I have ever or for that matter, will likely ever, attend. The church was packed, in what the funeral director told me after was the second biggest tribute he's ever had to manage in his 18 year career. That to me spoke in volumes of the character of this young woman. My son and the remainder of the Celtic Fiddlers played for the church service, in conjunction with a massed choir of friends, former and current colleagues and music teachers. It started with her sister giving a gut wrenching tribute, followed by the playing of a recent recording from the upcoming fiddler's CD featuring a solo vocal and piano cover by Robyn of "Fields of Gold". Wowzers! what a way to start. If you did not feel something by this point, you're heartless. There were people there from everywhere, including most of her St. FX class mates, professors, and even the university's chaplin, who travelled from Nova Scotia to Newfoundland in less than ideal winter travel conditions, just to be here for this. The hour and a half mass closed with the playing of another vocal piece by Robyn - it was her audition clip to St. FX music program, again a cover of "Cry me a River". As the casket was processed out of the church, it was done so to the fiddlers playing a multitude of bodhrans (Irish drum) - it was Robyn's favourite instrument to play in the group, and she was very good at it - followed by one of the group's favourite jig sets - what a sendoff! When the music finished, there was a lingering of the congregation in the church, so the fiddlers kept playing, and people just stood round - transfixed on the wonderfully lively music and Robyn's picture, her bodhran and tin whistle, laying on the grand piano. Like me, I imagine they were using those momentos to picture her there, amongst the group playing and singing her heart out, poking fun at her friends, all the while beaming with that magical smile that was only hers. I will miss her, the group will miss her. Even in her short stay on the planet, she did more than her fair share of making it a better place, and by doing so, accomplished more in her 19 years than many can even hope to do in a lifetime. If there's a band in heaven, then it just received one hell of a boost! I love you Robyn, rest in peace. Jamie |

Jamie, I'm so sorry. But that sounds like it was a beautiful ceremony. I hope the rest of the year is better for you. |
|
Civilisation, I vaguely realized then - and subsequent observation has confirmed the view - could not progress that way. It must have a greater guiding principle to survive. To treat it as a carcase off which each man tears as much as he can for himself, is to stand convicted a brute, fit for nothing better than a jungle existence, which is a death-struggle, leading nowhither. I did not believe that was the human destiny, for Man individually was sane and reasonable, only collectively a fool. I hope the gunner of that Hun two-seater shot him clean, bullet to heart, and that his plane, on fire, fell like a meteor through the sky he loved. Since he had to end, I hope he ended so. But, oh, the waste! The loss! - Cecil Lewis | |

That is the most noble thing any of us can do with our lives -- leave our small part of the world better than we found it. May she rest in peace. I will lift an Ave for her and those she left behind. |
