Okay, it's "Greene and Greene". I thought this was going to be some eco-friendly recycled shack.

I love this style. My favorite.

Man... The place looks and feels like a hotel. I hate the bedrooms... Too much wood. It needs something to balance out all the wood. Too buccolic and monotone. Brighter colors in the stained glass would help. Some deep greens and bright reds here and there... There's something strange about it, and it doesn't seem like much of a "masterpiece" to me.

Dig those twin beds in the Master bedroom. Apparently the Gamble's were proto-Ozzie/n/Harriets.

I liked the outside a lot. The inside had an overwhelming sense of "chill". The linens and carpets were all whites. No warm colors. Even the stained glass was muted. If I lived there I'd have bright carpets and drapes, lampshades and the like.

I can't recall if the article said when the house was built. It looked older than the house I grew up in, judging by the bathroom. The bathrooms in my childhood home (built in 1927) were much more colorful - the guest bath was the nicest and had gold mottled tile. The upstairs bath was green with black accents. The master bath was pink and blue. All of our wood cabinetry (kitchen and library) was painted. Certainly a cheaper route but it allowed for color. Our house was started by a minor local railroad owner, but when he went bankrupt it was finished (probably on a tight budget) by a local family (the Seuferts) that had several local businesses - the biggest was a fish cannery. They were responsible for four love pre-war homes in The Dalles that all still exist (including my own).

I am so adjective that I verb nouns!
A friend of mine lives around the corner in another Greene & Greene house. He was part of the committee that restored the Gamble House (I think it was about $2.5M to conserve). His house will be a life long project to restore to its glory, just a little Pasadena bungalow.

We are restoring our 1900 house, a very different era from the one shown here. It's interesting how even a few years make such a difference in style.

Frank and Kincaid, the interiors of the home shown would likely have included furnishings that would add some color as you noted was lacking. The textiles used in the draperies, upholstery and the floor coverings would do that. They would also add color in unique accents from the period. The pottery of that time was often very nice and included some wonderful colors, even turquoise or fantastic greens. The stained glass was often richly colored, too. Much of it was intended to invoke the colors of nature, with russets, golds, rich browns (which happen to be very 'in' again), and naturalistic greens.

If you like rich colors, come to my house. Since it dates from 1899 - 1900, we can easily use a very extraordinary color palette. Our music room is really over the top for pattern and color because it's in the front parlor. I love having the foyer and front parlor done like that, but it would be overwhelming to do the entire house that way. The rest of our place is more toned down, in fact the sitting room (living room) is very masculine.

It's quite beautiful and I like it, but it's a little to monochromatic for my tastes. Lot's of beautiful artwork though, and that's my idea of a kitchen. Perfect.

Frank, we have commissioned two stained glass windows for our home already. Now we have a third one in the works. It should be done by spring. It's for the music room and it depicts The Angel of Music in a Tiffany style design. We have found a very good stained glass artist. The first two he did for us were medium sized projects, but this third one is large, over 5 feet wide and over 5 feet tall.

Frank, stained glass is addictive!!!! I already have two more places in mind for more. Luckily, my hubby loves it, too. This current big project was his idea.

Pinch me, this must be a dream. How could I have been so lucky to marry this guy??!!

Cool! I still wonder if it would have been furnished more fully and colorfully in its early life. Pics I've seen of other homes from that era have more upholstered pieces to add some fabrics, color, and softness.

Right now it looks very much the museum. I love it when the homes look like the family is just in the next room, kids, pets, and all.

Our home looks NOT like a museum, but people who visit sometimes expect it. I've even had to remind one or two of them that this is a family home. We have our laptops out and stuff like that, but we keep the TV in an armoire cabinet.

Mostly our house has a happy, family, party kind of feel to it. People come in and comment right away that it's a perfect party house. I agree!

It may be more affordable than you would think, Frank. We have been pleasantly surprised.

Kenny, I am wise with years (ok, I'm old), so I know the best way to influence plans is by starting early to sway them.

I want to add hanging stained glass pieces across the sliding door off the kitchen and our two windows on either side of the fireplace (in the adjacent and connected family room). Something about 18" tall, and wide enough to fit the window/door openings. I'd just hang them from the header. We get gorgeous sunlight in the mornings as the room faces the East.
