Wow.

Listening to Schiff play the inventions and Sinfonias.

It is, by far, the most "romantic" version I've ever heard.

What was it Landowska said again....

Nothing is as effective as homeopathy.

I'd rather listen to an hour of Abba than an hour of The Beatles.

I love Schiff, I just got his Schubert Sonatas for my Dad for Christmas.

And I'll be seeing him twice in a week in April:

On the 17th:

Program Details
András Schiff, Piano

BEETHOVEN
Sonata No. 27 in E Minor
Sonata No. 28 in A Major, Op. 101
Sonata No. 29 in B-flat Major, Op. 106, "Hammerklavier"

And on the 19th:

BEETHOVEN
Sonata No. 30 in E Major, Op. 109
Sonata No. 31 in A-flat Major, Op. 110
Sonata No. 32 in C Minor, Op. 111
In my defense, I was left unsupervised.

HOLY CARP!!!
i also have schiffs inventions....schiffs bach is a real different sound then gould, thats for sure.

but not as heavy handed as barenboim.

i have schiffs goldbergs which i think is the best goldberg besides 1981 gould that i know.

i saw him do 3 mozart piano sonatas in vienna about 4 years ago and i saw him play a beethoven set (23,24,25 26) in tel aviv last year, and he was marvelous.

He did that set here in October. I'm really looking forward to seeing him - I've never seen him live before.

In my defense, I was left unsupervised.

Responding to criticism by fellow harpsichordist Rosalyn Tureck, she once said: "You play Bach your way, and I'll play him his way."

I have Schiff's Goldbergs as well. It is about as far from Gould (I or II) as you can imagine. And that's a good thing. Variety is the spice...

I also have been buying all of his Beethoven sonatas (not sure if the last one is out yet), and it's a wonderful collection. He seems to play them much more musically than the likes of Brendel and others. There's more (dare I say it?) nuance in his stylings.

However, when listening to him play the inventions and sinfonias, I'm not sure that nuance is called for.

Jon, no doubt you've heard Shiff's lectures on the Beethoven sonatas? Horace pointed me to them. They're wonderful.
