No, Aqua, I prefer straight up bitter unadulterated coffee. And I love the taste, acquired though it is.
Have you even tried cool-brewed coffee? (You use cold water and let it brew overnight, as opposed to hot.)

I hear it's more potent, and not at all bitter. Never tried it myself, though.
Nope. Unfortunately I have to watch the caffeine intake right now too. I use a mix of half regular and half decaf beans.
Wimp.

I've taken to adding something called STOK ... a shot of black coffee with high caffeine content ... to my morning coffee, every now and then. The box warns, not more than two a day.
D00d!!

You are VERY serious about your coffee. You were not joking when you told me way back when that you like your java.

brenda, what's egg coffee taste like? What's the deal with the egg and the shells, does it do something to the taste?

Just wondered since I've heard of it but have never tried.

You can overdose on caffeine. My wife did it once in Brazil.

Big Al
What happened?
She had swelling of her extremities, particularly noticeable at the wrists and ankles and a fast, weak pulse. She complained of sensitivity to light and sound.

I found her in bed in that condition when I arrived home from work. At first, we thought it might have been an insect bite since she is allergic to wasp and bee stings, but she had no recollection of any bite. She had spent an afternoon at a friend's apartment. As I inquired into what they had done, I learned that over the course of the afternoon they had drunk a large pot of coffee and then made and drunk another one. The Brazilian Robusto coffee is typically served as a small "cafezinho", similar to espresso in consistency and packs a kick. Two pots made and drunk like American coffee really packed a wallop.

She stayed in bed. I encouraged the drinking of lots of water and after a few hours she felt OK.

Big Al

On a different subject, where's Dol in a thread where we really need her.

OOOH! Does that mean you get good deals on cappuchinos (spelling??)?

I don't drink cappuccino's, but we do get a free pound of coffee every week. Although, the way you and your husband apparently slug it back every day a pound probably wouldn't last you a whole week. :)

Aqua, here's some info on the egg coffee. It makes the coffee taste smoother and less acidic IMHO. Yes, I have had egg coffee many times at my hubby's grandma's house. She died last August, and we inherited her egg coffee pot.

Enjoy!

Lutheran Egg Coffee

Ingredients
1 egg
1 cup cold water, divided
1 cup regular grind coffee
6 cups boiling water
Directions
1Use a graniteware (enamel) coffee pot.
2Wash egg; break it into a small bowl, reserving shell, and beat slightly. Add 1/2 cup cold water, the 1 cup ground coffee and the reserved egg shell, crushed. Mix thoroughly. Turn into coffee pot; pour on boiling water, and stir. (I remember the ladies adding the coffee/egg mixture directly to the boiling water.) Optional: The spout of the pot can be stuffed with soft paper towel to prevent escape of the fragrant aroma. Place on front of range and boil 3 minutes. If not boiled, coffee is cloudy. If boiled too long, too much tannic acid is developed. Add remaining 1/2 cup cold water; which perfects clearing. Cold water, which is heavier than hot, sinks to the bottom and carries the grounds with it. After coffee has settled, serve at once.

Here's a funny version.

Grandma's Secret Weapon:

Scandinavian Egg Coffee

If you have some time on your hands and want to try something completely different, make yourself and your closest friends some 'Egg Coffee'.
Here's how to do it:

Get six cups of good clean water boiling in something resembling a porcelain coffee pot.

While that's happening, gingerly beat one large egg in a cup, and save the eggshell (we'll need that).

Add a smidgen of salt to the beaten egg.

Spoon seven tablespoons of your favorite ground coffee (Scandinavian blend to be consistent) into another cup, add 1/3 of the beaten egg and about a 1/3 of the eggshell, crushed, into the coffee grounds. Mix it into a potting-soil like um, paste.

Add this potting-soil like mixture to the rapidly boiling water, and stir.

Bring the whole thing to a boil again for a couple minutes and then turn the heat down to simmer.

If you're lucky and the Scandinavian coffee gods have been appeased, the grounds will sink to the bottom of the pot.

Pour the tasty brew off the top into your favorite mug and ascend to the heights of coffeedom. If the coffee gods were not appeased and your grounds won't sink, you'll have to filter the brew but it comes out almost as good.

Find somebody to do the dishes and go riding.

Thanks brenda! I will be trying my hand at some egg coffee this week! :thumb:

By the way, here's a cookie recipe for ya. You don't need to add all the extras to make them come out decent -- you just need the basics -- but just be sure to be fairly liberal with the dough, and make the balls tight and uniform around the candy or else they'll bust open in the oven.

1 Cup regular sugar
1 Cup brown sugar
1 Cup butter (soft or melted)
1 Cup peanut butter (creamy)
2 Teaspoons vanilla
1/4 Cup honey
2 eggs

3 Cups flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoons salt
about 20 Snickers miniature candy bars

Either cut up the candy bars into halves, or use a whole one. Either way, shape dough into balls around the candy bars, and then place on a greased cookie sheet, place them in the oven at 375 for 13-15 minutes.

(Optional) : Chop up a handful of butterscotch or chocolate morsels, and place them in with the dough.
I cite irreconcilable differences.

I have a Mr. Coffee that I paid 24 bucks for about 10 years ago. Every night before I go to bed I load it with two scoops of Folgers Breakfast Blend, fill it with water, and set the timer. Every morning I drink one cup (ok, two if I've had a rough night...) then pour the rest out. I don't want to see or smell the stuff after that until the next day.
