HOLY CARP!!!
|
I've been trying to focus on local, handmade gifts. I found some neat glass necklaces made by a local artist and I got one for my mom. It's pink and orange, and I got her a pink cashmere sweater to match. Today I went into a local stained glass studio (they make windows, lamps, etc.) and there were selling stained glass snowflakes (made from bevelled glass). I picked up a bunch -- they were affordable. Although not locally made, I got my husband some antique prints that we can hang in our house somehwhere. They were from a local antique store. Anyway, I've had fun trying to stay in budget and get some unique items that support local artists and store owners. What other cool gifts have people found? |

My MIL and mom prefer to get 'no more stuff', so we get them season tickets to local theater groups or to a local travel agency for day trips or longer trips. We do the same for my stepdad and MIL's SO. I'm trying to get them to understand we would rather not get more 'stuff' either. I prefer gift certificates to a dinner theater or something like that. The hard ones for us to buy for are the teens. If they are of driving age, they LOVE gas cards from a regional chain of gas stations. |

![]() Hubby wants these scotch glasses, so I got him a set of four. Hubby has gone nuts with getting theater tickets for our family. We now have tickets for Fiddler on the Roof and Phantom of the Opera. The Fiddler production features Chaim Topol in the lead role. It should be good. |

We just sent a two pound box of Fanny May chocolates to my brother and his family. I haven’t bought candy in years. I was shocked at how much the price has gone up: $44 for a two pound box. |

Yep. We're on the 'no more stuff' program too. And I set a firm budget for us this year and made us stick to it. Rockin' to the frugality beat. Janet found a very cool Santa Claus toilet seat cover for her office white elephant. I would never in a million years thought I would think that was neat, but this one was. No kidding. The 'sitting on Santa's face' jokes may commence. |

Cashmere sweaters at Macy's online are half off. That's $55 for a very nice sweater that cost $110 weeks earlier. They are 40% off in stores, so the internet is the better deal. Also, if you spend $100, shipping is free and guaranteed to be at your doorstep by Christmas Eve (provided you order by their cutoff date) Lindsey and I are headed to NYC tomorrow. I got a heads up from my sister that stuff in Saks Fifth Avenue's flagship store is slashed up to 70% off...so we'll be going to check that out. |

HOLY CARP!!!

I only buy for a few people, and usually try to make them personalized (like, not gift cards, unless that's what is suggested to me). Just my immediate family, and my closest friend. She's my favorite to buy for because we are very similar, and if I like it it's pretty much guaranteed she will as well. Last week I finally decided to stop into this country shop close to here (on a back road, not near any other commercial site, situated in a great old house. . . you know the type). They have a lot of really neat stuff, but I wasn't really prepared to buy at the time. One of the items that caught my eye was this heavy (brass, iron, I have no idea) bullhead which served as a coat hanger. Pretty small--smaller than my hand--so not tacky or anything. I don't know why, but I thought it was pretty awesome. I couldn't think of a reason to buy it at the time, so I didn't. Well, I've since decided that it would make a good gift for my friend. We took a trip to Spain together a few years ago, and on one of our hikes we ran into some bulls. We got as close as our nerves allowed and took a few pics. I'm going to frame one of them for her, to go along with the totally random coat hanger. I think she's going to get a kick out of it.

Another odd-sounding gift, but which I'm kinda excited about: a pepper grinder for my dad. We had a short discussion a few months back about how we prefer to chew our pepper, rather than deal with the usual light dusting that comes out of the shaker. I made a mental note to get one for him for the holidays. Dad's usually the hardest one to think of a gift for, so I was kind of proud of myself for this one. |

Dad's are hard to buy for. i know. I am one. We just go out and buy whatever we need, and that doesn't leave much room for gifts. Plus, at this stage of my life, there is not much of anything attainable that I want and do not have. |

they are cool! The only gift I have bought that I'm really tickled about is for my son. I got him a Gallileo thermometer...I know he'll love it. He's always been fascinated with weather, and I love them as obects d'arts. I also had a dog tag made for Amy with her school and jersey number on it. I know she'll like that. |
