HOLY CARP!!!
|
|

Civilisation, I vaguely realized then - and subsequent observation has confirmed the view - could not progress that way. It must have a greater guiding principle to survive. To treat it as a carcase off which each man tears as much as he can for himself, is to stand convicted a brute, fit for nothing better than a jungle existence, which is a death-struggle, leading nowhither. I did not believe that was the human destiny, for Man individually was sane and reasonable, only collectively a fool. I hope the gunner of that Hun two-seater shot him clean, bullet to heart, and that his plane, on fire, fell like a meteor through the sky he loved. Since he had to end, I hope he ended so. But, oh, the waste! The loss! - Cecil Lewis | |

"Any man who would make an X rated movie should be forced to take his daughter to see it". - John Wayne There is a line we cross when we go from "I will believe it when I see it" to "I will see it when I believe it". HOLY CARP!!!

Not at all. I like it. When you are prepared the snow is beautiful, almost magical. I haven't driven in it yet. Living on campus means I don't drive much. In fact I'm still on the same tank of gas that I bought in the States back in August. Last night my walk home in the snow was wonderful. I was all bundled up and wearing my warm snowboots, walking on a pouffy flat cloud of white powder. I passed up the salty sidewalks for the lawns which were blanketed with about 4 inches of the stuff sparkling under the lights of the campus. I'm not sure why but there is some thrill in being the first to defile the perfect white carpet with footprints. Snow was falling in large flakes that didn't want to fall to the ground, forgotten and lost in the crowd. They preferred to swirl and dance around playfully in the gentle breeze. They must have very little mass for their area because some were actually momentarily floating UP. My head was all wrapped in scarves and a hood but flakes still got in a zinged my eyes. You even have to walk differently when walking where there could be ice. You can't hurry; no pushing back with your feet. You do more of a plop your foot straight down and lift it straight up thing. I'm loving the snow. |

Minnesoootans may complain about the snow, but they complain even more if they don't have any snow to complain about. Grown men get to play in the snow here; it's called snow blowing. Some of them will even go up and down the street to blow the snow out of their neighbors' drives. And they do the sidewalks on the way. Mother and I would roll our eyes as Dad would turn a little too fast with the truck just to have the rear wheels skid a little on the snow or ice. He knew how to drive in the winter, but he just liked to have a little fun.My daughter adores the snow and hates the heat of summer. It's a good thing she was born in Minnesooota. I'm glad you are enjoying it, too, Kenny. It can be fun. There is something wondrous and beautiful about a gentle snowfall with big, fluffy flakes. I was born and raised with this kind of thing, and I still see the beauty. It has to be experienced to understand. The mom in me is happy to read about all your winter outerwear, too. You're never too old to have a mom. |

Brenda, The girl I'm seeing is from Minnesoooota, as you know, and it's funny. When she first moved here in August she was so glad to be away from all that snow. Now all she wants is for DC to have a decent snowfall! Today we might have flurries...perhaps that's an appetizer. |

I thought with all the global warming, snow would get warmer and be more comfortable. Not yet I guess. . . |

24F on my way to work, this morning. If it gets much colder, I may have to consider parking the motorcycle until it warms up a bit. This afternoon will be nice. We're up to 40F. |

Frank, that's a cold ride! If you find certain body part has frozen for over 4 hours, contact your physician immediately. . .:) Worst memory for me: riding through the Siskeyous (northern Calif.) in the middle of the night. Full leathers, but so cold we put on all extra clothes, even put socks over gloves. Then it started to snow, then snow mixed with rain, a huge storm of snow/rain and 50 mph winds. Totally soaked through the leathers, miserable. Then my friends bike blew a plug, trucker picked him up, I was found by the State Police in Shasta. Long story, one of those biking "adventures" I guess. . . |

See, 89? I tell nothing but truth. Anytime you need insight into the mind of a Minnesoootan, especially of the female persuasion, just let me know.

Holy crap!! What a nightmare!! Fortunately, I only live about 6 miles from work, so I don't have much time to get cold. If it gets colder than this, I'm going to have to break out the chaps and probably a turtleneck sweater.
