Don't we already have The National Guard?

Why would you want it seperate from the military?

What on earth would you be arming it with, if you funded it the same as the military?

Who would they be reporting to, and what would their parameters be?

Scary.
The problem with having an open mind is that people keep trying to put things in it.

HOLY CARP!!!
Maybe they can be a human shield along the US - Mexico border.
Civilisation, I vaguely realized then - and subsequent observation has confirmed the view - could not progress that way. It must have a greater guiding principle to survive. To treat it as a carcase off which each man tears as much as he can for himself, is to stand convicted a brute, fit for nothing better than a jungle existence, which is a death-struggle, leading nowhither. I did not believe that was the human destiny, for Man individually was sane and reasonable, only collectively a fool.

I hope the gunner of that Hun two-seater shot him clean, bullet to heart, and that his plane, on fire, fell like a meteor through the sky he loved. Since he had to end, I hope he ended so. But, oh, the waste! The loss!

The Confederate soldier was peculiar in that he was ever ready to fight, but never ready to submit to the routine duty and discipline of the camp or the march. The soldiers were determined to be soldiers after their own notions, and do their duty, for the love of it, as they thought best. Carlton McCarthy

You guys are reacting in pretty much the same way as the people in the 'Blacks' thread.

Do you honestly believe this Hitlerite nonsense?

How would you refer to a liberal that said Bush was planning a secret police force?
What do you mean "we", have you got a mouse in your pocket?

I can't imagine any liberal being mean enough to say that.

Doesn't matter if a liberal or a conservative said it, I would give it the ol' middle finger, too. I'm thinking that this is one of Obama's promises that simply isn't going to come to fruition.

Not. A. Chance.

Or else maybe this is the army that's going to launch the revolution that will carve out the separatist black homeland that Farrakhan has been hoping for...

Well in this case, Obama really said it. I just don't think we know what he meant. We already have a Military, a National Guard and a Peace Corps. He might have just been talking thru his hat, who knows?

So what do you think he meant by it, Daniel?

Why do we need some paramilitary organization when we already have State militias/national guard?

So tell us what he meant, John.

Why do we need a paramilitary civilian defense organization that is as well funded and as well armed as the US military? That is just FVCKING crazy. But those are his words.

Are you really nutty enough to believe that Obama wants a paramilitary?

This is a domestic Peace Corps kind of thing.

Bush can say that energy is a matter of national security, and you don't think he's going to start arming oil workers.

How does "domestic Peace Corps" = "powerful, strong national security force"?

I don't know what the hell he means by, "We gotta have a civilian national security force that is just as powerful, just as strong, just as well funded [as the military]" but it certainly can't be parsed as some kind of "peace corps" or made up of "middle schoolers". It is a statement that invites speculation of the worst kind but just what the hell did he mean?

The same way that equating oil with national security does.

When he proposes something, then we'll know.

The bottom line for now is that it was a good Halloween story to scare the gullible before the election, but, at this point, there's really no reason to speculate or to worry. There's nothing on the table, and worrying about a proposal that could be made but hasn't been made serves no purpose. There's nothing left that you can do about it.

When something is put on the table, you'll have plenty of time to worry then, if there's anything to worry about.

When facism comes to America, it will come wrapped in the flag.
Actually, the correct quote is:

"When fascism comes to America it will be wrapped in the flag and carrying a cross"

I've noticed that Christians sometimes leave that last bit off.

I don't know.... So far, the fascism I've seen, has been cloaked in the sheep's clothing of "tolerance" and "diversity," when the people screaming about these two items are the least tolerant of anyone, most especially when they encounter views that are "diverse" and differ from their own.

You've got one vague quote and the whole right wing internet is abuzz horror stories of what this means.

Criminy, I hear his quote and the thing that pops into my mind is Homeland Security. I wonder if any of these reactionaries were moaning about fascism with its implementation. What a bunch of sorry Chicken Littles.
